Guggal Dhoop Sticks

Dhoop is not incense

People use the words interchangeably, but they are different things. Agarbatti is a fragrance stick on a bamboo core, made to scent a room. Dhoop is a solid mass of resin and herbs, made to produce dense purifying smoke. Dhoop is what temples burn, and what is used at the end of an aarti when the whole space is being purified rather than perfumed.

Guggal is the classic dhoop resin — from the Commiphora wightii tree, used in havan and dhoop for millennia.

How to use

1. Light the tip and let it catch properly — dhoop takes longer to establish than agarbatti.
2. Blow out the flame so it glows and smokes.
3. Place on a metal tray or in a dhoop holder, never on cloth or wood — dhoop burns hot and the base gets warm.
4. Use one at a time. Dhoop is dense and one is genuinely enough for a large room.
5. Ventilate well.

When dhoop is traditionally burned

At the close of aarti, during havan, when purifying a space before a puja, at griha pravesh, and at dusk in many households as part of the evening sandhya.

A note on smoke

All incense and dhoop produce smoke and particulates. Burn in a ventilated room, avoid small closed spaces, and take care around anyone with asthma or a respiratory condition.
