How to tell pure camphor from the cheap kind

Most camphor sold in India is synthetic, made from turpentine. It is legal and widely used, but it behaves differently: it burns with a smoky yellow flame, leaves a dark oily residue in the kapoor dani, and gives off a harsh smell rather than a clean one.

Pure camphor sublimates completely. Burn it and there should be nothing left in the holder — no black film, no sticky ring. That single test tells you more than any label.

How to use it

1. Place one or two tablets in a kapoor dani or aarti holder — never directly on a cloth or wooden surface.
2. Light and let the flame establish before lifting.
3. Circle clockwise before the deity, traditionally three, five or seven times.
4. Let it burn out completely rather than blowing it out.
5. Camphor is also placed on a plate in a room to fragrance it — a common practice at Diwali and during Navratri.

Storage — the part most people get wrong

Camphor sublimates: it turns from solid straight to vapour at room temperature. An open packet in a warm cupboard will visibly shrink over a few weeks and the tablets will go soft-edged and lose their scent. Keep it in a tightly closed container, away from heat and direct sunlight, and it will hold for a long time.

Safety

Camphor is flammable and burns hot. Keep it away from curtains, cloth and hair, ventilate the room, and keep it out of reach of children — camphor is toxic if swallowed, particularly by children, and even small amounts require medical attention.
