Why chandan is the default temple fragrance

Sandalwood is the scent most associated with Hindu worship. It is used as chandan paste for tilak, as powder in havan, and as incense — and unlike sharper floral fragrances it does not compete with the space. It is warm, dry and steady, and it is the one fragrance almost nobody in a household objects to.

For meditation and japa in particular, chandan is preferred precisely because it recedes. A fragrance you keep noticing is a fragrance that keeps interrupting you.

How to get the best from agarbatti

1. Light the tip, let it flame for two or three seconds, then blow the flame out so the tip glows.
2. Place it in a holder with an ash tray — not upright in a pot of rice, which lets ash drop across the mandir.
3. One or two sticks is enough for a room. More is not more devotional; it is just more smoke.
4. Ventilate the room during and after burning.

Storage

Keep the pack closed in a cool, dry place. Agarbatti loses fragrance when left open, and humidity makes sticks burn unevenly.

A note on smoke

All incense produces smoke and particulates. Burn it in a ventilated room, and avoid burning it in a small closed space or around anyone with asthma or a respiratory condition.
