Sphatik Mala (Crystal Quartz)
A natural sphatik mala — 108 clear crystal quartz beads plus sumeru, hand-strung.
Sphatik stays noticeably cool to the touch, which is why it is the mala traditionally favoured for long japa in hot weather.

What sphatik is
Sphatik is natural clear quartz. In Hindu tradition it is associated with purity and clarity, and is used for japa to Maa Lakshmi, Maa Saraswati and Lord Shiva. It is also the mala most often chosen by people who find wooden beads uncomfortable in humid weather — quartz stays cool against the skin.
Details
- 108 natural crystal quartz beads plus sumeru
- Hand-strung
- Natural quartz — expect minor internal inclusions and small variations between beads
- Cool to the touch, heavier than a tulsi or rudraksha mala
How japa is done on a mala
- Sit facing north or east, mala in the right hand.
- Hold each bead between the thumb and middle finger — the index finger is traditionally not used.
- Begin at the bead next to the sumeru (head bead) and recite the mantra once per bead.
- On completing 108, do not cross the sumeru — turn the mala and go back the other way.
- Keep the mala off the floor, and traditionally covered by a gaumukhi bag while chanting.
How to tell natural quartz from glass
- Temperature — natural quartz feels cold and stays cold for a moment after handling; glass warms immediately.
- Inclusions — natural quartz usually carries faint internal veils or wisps. Flawlessly clear, identical beads often indicate glass.
- Weight — quartz is denser than glass of the same size.
Caring for a mala
- Keep it in a cloth bag or mala box, not loose in a drawer.
- Do not let it get wet repeatedly — water weakens the thread and, on rudraksha, softens the surface over time.
- Wipe with a dry cloth; some households apply a little sandalwood or mustard oil occasionally to rudraksha.
- Restring it if the thread frays rather than continuing to use a weakened mala.
An honest note
We sell sphatik for its traditional and devotional use. We make no healing, medical or astrological claims for crystal quartz. If an astrologer has prescribed a particular stone for a particular purpose, treat that as their advice rather than ours.
