Why the source matters

Gangajal is not an ingredient that can be substituted. It is used at the moment of sankalp, poured over the Shivling in abhishek, sprinkled to purify a new home, and offered at the end of life. A household keeps one bottle and reaches for it at every significant occasion.

Which is exactly why its origin matters. Much of what is sold as gangajal is bottled far from the river. Ours is collected at the ghats of Kashi, the city where the Ganga turns north, and sealed there before dispatch.

What Ganga Jal is used for

• Abhishek — the ceremonial bathing of the Shivling, and of idols in daily puja
• Sankalp — taken in the palm with akshat at the start of any puja
• Kalash sthapana — filling the kalash at Navratri, Satyanarayan and Vivah
• Griha pravesh — sprinkled through a new home to purify the space
• Daily puja — a few drops added to the offering water
• Rudrabhishek, Mahashivratri and Sawan Somvar worship
• Antim sanskar and shraddh rituals

How to use and store it

1. Keep the bottle in the mandir or a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight.
2. Pour rather than dip — do not put fingers or used vessels into the bottle.
3. Reseal immediately after use.
4. A few drops added to ordinary water is the traditional practice for purifying it for ritual use, so a bottle lasts a long time.

By tradition, gangajal is not kept in the kitchen or bathroom, and is not placed on the floor.

Does Ganga Jal expire?

In Hindu tradition gangajal is considered akshaya — it is not treated as something that spoils, and households commonly keep the same bottle for years. Kept sealed and out of sunlight, it does not need replacing. This is a statement of ritual tradition, not a claim about drinking water quality — this product is sold for ritual use, not for drinking.
