Ashta = eight, gandha = fragrance

Ashtagandha is not a single ingredient but a blend of eight aromatic substances. The exact eight vary by tradition and region — commonly sandalwood, saffron, agar, camphor, and other aromatic woods, resins and roots. It is the tilak the formal vidhi specifies, which is why a pandit will ask for it by name.

Because it is a blend of eight aromatics rather than one, the fragrance is layered and deeper than plain chandan, and it holds longer on the skin.

Details

  • 25 g ashtagandha tilak blend
  • Eight traditional aromatic components
  • Mixes to a smooth paste with water
  • Deeper, longer-lasting fragrance than plain chandan

How to use

  1. Take a small quantity onto the puja thali.
  2. Add a few drops of water or gangajal and work to a smooth paste.
  3. Apply to the deity with the ring finger of the right hand.
  4. Also used for tilak on the yajaman during sankalp, and on guests at ceremonies.
  5. Mix only what is needed — prepared paste does not keep.

Which tilak for which occasion

  • Chandan — everyday tilak, cooling and plain
  • Chandan-kesar — Vishnu and Krishna puja, formal occasions
  • Ashtagandha — formal vidhi, sankalp, havan, ceremonial pujas
  • Kumkum / roli — general tilak, swastik and offering

Storage

Keep in a closed dry container. Aromatic blends lose fragrance when left open, and the resinous components clump if they take up moisture.

Ideal for

Formal puja and havan, sankalp tilak, Satyanarayan katha, griha pravesh, Vivah, Rudrabhishek, and any puja performed with a pandit.

A traditional tilak blend of eight aromatic substances - ashta means eight, gandha means fragrance. The exact eight vary by region and tradition, commonly including sandalwood, saffron, agar and other aromatic woods and resins.

Because it blends eight aromatics rather than one, the fragrance is layered and deeper and holds longer. It is also the tilak that formal puja vidhi specifies by name.

For formal vidhi - sankalp tilak, havan, Satyanarayan katha, griha pravesh, Vivah and any puja performed with a pandit. Plain chandan is the everyday tilak.

Add a few drops of water or gangajal to a small quantity on the thali and work it to a smooth paste. Mix only what you need, as prepared paste does not keep.

Moisture. The resinous components absorb humidity and clump. Keep it closed and dry, and break up any lumps before mixing.

Yes. Ashtagandha is included in the Rudrabhishek, Wedding, Navratri, Satyanarayan, Grih Pravesh, Diwali and Mahashivratri kits.
