The tilak for the occasions that matter

Plain chandan is the everyday tilak. Chandan-kesar — sandalwood with saffron — is what is used when the occasion is formal: Vishnu and Krishna puja, Janmashtami, Ekadashi, a wedding, a ceremony with guests.

Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world, so a genuine chandan-kesar blend is not cheap and is not deeply coloured. If a tilak is a vivid orange-yellow throughout, that is usually colouring rather than kesar.

How to apply

1. Take a small quantity onto the puja thali.
2. Add a few drops of clean water or gangajal and work to a smooth paste — not runny.
3. Apply to the deity with the ring finger of the right hand.
4. For a Vaishnava urdhva pundra, draw the two upright lines from the bridge of the nose upward.
5. Apply to people with the thumb, traditionally with a few grains of akshat pressed on.

Why chandan is used for tilak at all

Sandalwood is cooling. Applied to the forehead between the brows, it was traditionally understood to settle the mind before worship — which is the practical reason chandan, rather than any other paste, became the tilak of choice.

Storage

Keep dry and closed. Mix only what you need for the puja — prepared paste does not keep and dries hard within hours.
