What the janeu is

The yagyopavit or janeu is a cotton thread of three strands, worn over the left shoulder and under the right arm. It is conferred at the upanayan sanskar and worn from then on, replaced when it frays or on prescribed occasions.

The three strands are traditionally understood as the three debts — to the sages, to the ancestors and to the gods — and as the three gunas. That is why the thread is three-stranded rather than plain.

How it is used

Positions of the thread

• Upavita — over the left shoulder; normal daily wear and deva karya.
• Nivita — around the neck, used in certain rites.
• Prachinavita — over the right shoulder, for pitru karya such as shraddh and tarpan.

Disposing of an old janeu

A replaced janeu is not thrown in household waste. It is traditionally placed in flowing water, or at the root of a tree.
