Why red and why yellow

The two colours are not decorative choices. Red is the colour of Shakti and of auspiciousness — used for Devi, for the kalash, for the sankalp cloth and for Lakshmi sthapana. Yellow is the colour of Vishnu, Krishna and Brihaspati — used for Satyanarayan, Vishnu puja, Thursday worship and Janmashtami.

Most rituals call for one or the other by name, which is why households keep both.

What the set includes

  • Red puja cloth
  • Yellow puja cloth
  • Plain unstitched cotton

How the cloths are used

  1. Chowki cover — spread over the low table before the murtis are installed.
  2. Sankalp cloth — the red cloth on which the sankalp is taken.
  3. Kalash — wrapped around the coconut placed on the kalash.
  4. Mandir shelf — laid under the deities in the home mandir.
  5. Deity offering — offered as vastra during shodashopachara puja.

Keeping puja cloth

Puja cloth is kept ritually clean. Wash it separately from household laundry, dry it in the sun, and do not use it for any other purpose. When worn out it is traditionally placed in flowing water or given to a temple rather than binned.

Ideal for

Home mandir setup, chowki and kalash sthapana, Navratri, Diwali and Satyanarayan puja, griha pravesh, weddings, and deity vastra offering.

No, they are plain unstitched cotton, which is the traditional form for puja and deity vastra.

They are sized for a household chowki, kalash and mandir shelf rather than for a large mandap.

Separately from household laundry, dried in the sun, and used for nothing but puja. Puja cloth is kept ritually clean.

It is traditionally not put in household waste - place it in flowing water or give it to a temple.

The red cloth. Yellow is used for Vishnu, Krishna and Satyanarayan puja.
