The thread that opens the ritual

Almost no Hindu ritual begins without kalawa. It is tied on the wrist of everyone present, wound around the neck of the kalash before sthapana, tied at sankalp, and used to bind the coconut and puja items. It costs almost nothing and no puja proceeds without it.

How it is tied

1. Men and unmarried girls — the right wrist.
2. Married women — the left wrist.
3. The person receiving it keeps that fist closed and the other hand on their head while it is tied.
4. Wound an odd number of times — traditionally three, five or seven.
5. On the kalash, wound around the neck before the mango leaves and coconut are placed.

When to remove it

Custom is that kalawa is not pulled off casually. It is worn until it wears through on its own, or removed on a Tuesday or Saturday and replaced. An old kalawa is traditionally not thrown in household waste — it is placed in flowing water or at the root of a tree.
