Diwali & Lakshmi Puja Samagri List 2026 — The Complete Checklist

Almost every Lakshmi Puja samagri list online is written for one evening. Diwali is five days, and four of them need things the Lakshmi Puja list does not contain — which is why so many households find themselves sending someone to the market on Govardhan morning.

This is the full list, laid out day by day, with the muhurat rule that actually decides when you perform the puja. Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November 2026 and Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November 2026.

Diwali is not one puja. It is five days of different rituals.

This is the single most useful thing to understand before you buy anything.

Buy only for day three and you will be short on days one, two and five.

Why two of those dates carry an asterisk

I am going to be straight with you about something most pages will not admit: the back half of the 2026 Diwali calendar is not agreed across panchangs.

Dhanteras on 6 November and Lakshmi Puja on 8 November are firm — every panchang I checked agrees. But for Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj, some list 9 and 10 November, others list 10 and 11 November.

The reason appears to be tithi timing. Kartik Amavasya runs from the early afternoon of 8 November until around midday on 9 November, which means Pratipada — the tithi Govardhan Puja belongs to — begins in the middle of a civil day. Different panchang traditions resolve a mid-day tithi start differently, and the two-day spread follows from that.

So: confirm Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj against the panchang your family follows, or ask your acharya. Anyone printing a single confident date for those two days this year is not telling you the whole picture. Dhanteras and Lakshmi Puja you can plan around now.

The rule most households get wrong: when Lakshmi Puja is actually performed

Lakshmi Puja is not "sometime after dark." There is a rule, and it is more specific than most families realise.

The preferred window is Pradosh Kaal — roughly the ninety minutes bracketing sunset, beginning about forty-five minutes before and running about forty-five minutes after. It is tied to your sunset, not to a clock time.

Within that, the strongest slot is where Pradosh Kaal overlaps a Sthir Lagna — a fixed rising sign, of which Vrishabha (Taurus) is the one usually sought on Diwali night. The reasoning traditionally given is that a fixed sign settles what is invoked rather than letting it pass through.

Amavasya must be running. In 2026 Kartik Amavasya begins in the early afternoon of 8 November, so the evening Pradosh window sits comfortably inside it.

Mahanishita Kaal, the midnight window, is a secondary option. It is traditional in certain Shakta and Tantric lineages and for some business observances. For a household it is an addition to the Pradosh Kaal puja, not a replacement for it.

Why you should distrust the timings printed everywhere

You will see "6:00 PM to 8:00 PM" repeated across dozens of pages. That is a Delhi figure, and India is wide enough that it is simply wrong for most of the country. Sunset on the same evening differs by well over an hour between Kolkata and Ahmedabad — Kolkata's Pradosh Kaal has closed before Mumbai's has opened.

We are not going to print a clock time here. Get the Pradosh Kaal window for your own city from a panchang, or ask your acharya, and note that the Sthir Lagna overlap needs a local calculation too. On Diwali of all nights, this is worth one phone call.

1. Deity, vessels and utensils

Ganesha is worshipped before Lakshmi — step four of the vidhi, before the kalash is even invoked. Most households already keep a Ganesha murti in the mandir, which is why kits do not duplicate it. Check that yours is there before the evening.

2. Abhishek and purification

Milk and curd are perishable and cannot ship. Buy them the same day.

3. Tilak, anointing and akshat

Akshat must be unbroken. Broken grains are not offered.

4. Threads and offerings

The kalash is topped with mango leaves and a coconut. The leaves must be fresh — pick them up with the flowers.

5. Deepak, light and fragrance

Lotus is Lakshmi's own flower and worth asking your florist to reserve a few days ahead — on Diwali morning they are gone.

Coins, currency notes, the account books or bahi khata, and any gold or silver you wish blessed are placed before the Goddess during the puja. These are yours. No kit supplies them, and you should be wary of any that offers to.

What a puja kit is — and what it is not

This is worth saying plainly, because it is where expectations most often break.

A Lakshmi Puja kit is for the puja. It is not for lighting the house.

The kit carries two diyas and twenty-five wicks, which is right for the puja thali and the ritual itself. Illuminating a home on Diwali night is a completely different order of quantity — most families light somewhere between twenty and a hundred diyas across thresholds, balconies, the tulsi vrindavan and the stairwell.

Work out your own number, then buy:

• Diyas by the dozen, locally, a few days early. Clay diyas should be soaked in water for a few hours and dried before first use, or they drink the oil and burn out fast.
• Oil or ghee by volume against that number. This is why the kit excludes it — the quantity depends entirely on how many lamps you are lighting and for how many nights.
• Extra wicks, since the kit's twenty-five will not cover a lit house for five evenings.

A kit that claimed to include enough diyas and oil for your whole house would either be enormous and expensive, or it would be padding the item count with a token handful. We would rather tell you the number and let you buy it properly.

What you need on the other four days

Dhanteras (6 November). Traditionally the buying day — metal, utensils, or whatever the household is acquiring this year. The Yama deepam is lit after dark, placed facing south, and is usually kept separate from the mandir lamps. You will want one dedicated lamp and oil for it. Choti Diwali / Narak Chaturdashi. The Abhyang Snan is a pre-dawn oil bath with ubtan applied beforehand. You need sesame or mustard oil and ubtan — both bought locally and fresh. Very little else.

Govardhan Puja. Annakut is a food offering, cooked at home. What you need from outside the kitchen is minimal: a lamp, some flowers, and akshat.

Bhai Dooj. A tilak thali — roli, akshat, a diya, sweets. Small and domestic.

The vidhi, in order

If you have the booklet, follow it. In outline, the sequence runs:

1. Aachman and purification.
2. Light the diya and dhoop; ring the bell.
3. Take the sankalp.
4. Worship Ganesha first — kumkum, akshat, a flower, a sweet.
5. Invoke the kalash, and the Navagraha briefly.
6. Begin the Lakshmi puja; abhishek if your tradition practises it.
7. Offer the sixteen upachaar — tilak, flowers, garland, akshat, dhoop, diya, bhog.
8. Place the wealth items before the Goddess.
9. Chant the Lakshmi mantra.
10. Aarti.
11. Pranam, ask forgiveness, distribute prasad.

Ganesha before Lakshmi is not optional and not a regional variation. It is the order.

When to involve a pandit

A household can perform Lakshmi Puja from a vidhi booklet, and most do. The vidhi is well documented and the sequence is stable.

Two situations are worth a call to your acharya: if you are performing the havan with a full sankalp, and if you are doing the bahi khata puja for a business, where practice varies considerably by community and trade. In both cases, share the item list a week ahead so he can tell you what to add.
