How to Perform Dhanteras Puja

1. Clean the puja space and the main doorway. Draw a swastik and rangoli at the entrance.
2. Place the Dhanvantari–Lakshmi–Ganesh murti set on a red cloth facing east or north-east.
3. Establish the copper kalash with gangajal, a supari, a coin and mango or paan leaves.
4. Read the sankalp sheet, stating your name, gotra and the intention of the puja.
5. Offer tilak with kumkum, chandan and akshat; tie the kalava; offer the chunri to Maa Lakshmi.
6. Light the brass diya and camphor. Offer panchmeva, makhana and mishri as naivedya.
7. Worship the bahi khata and any newly purchased metal, then perform the havan if you are doing the full ritual.
8. Finish with aarti and light the 21 clay diyas at the doorway after sunset.

When to Perform It in 2026

Dhanteras falls on the Trayodashi tithi of Kartik Krishna Paksha, two days before Diwali. The pradosh kaal — roughly the 90 minutes after sunset — is the preferred window for Lakshmi and Dhanvantari puja. Confirm the exact muhurat for your city with a panchang before the day.
