Why 22 Items, Not 40

Raksha Bandhan is not a havan ritual. There is no kalash sthapana, no navgrah offering, no samidha. Padding this box with havan samagri would raise the price and the item count without improving the ceremony by a single minute.

What the ritual actually requires is roli, kumkum, akshat, chandan, a diya, camphor, something sweet, and the rakhi itself. That is what is in here — at the quantities a ceremony for one or two brothers actually consumes. We would rather sell you the right box than a bigger one.

Why Two Rakhis

A premium designer rakhi and a traditional mauli raksha sutra are both included. Many families tie the plain sacred thread as the ritual rakhi and keep the designer one as the one he wears — and where there are two brothers, or a brother and a cousin, the second thread saves a trip. Either can be used as the raksha sutra; neither is more correct than the other.

Do Not Tie the Rakhi During Bhadra Kaal

This is the part of Raksha Bandhan most households get wrong, and it is worth more attention than any item on this list.

Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravan Purnima, and Bhadra kaal frequently occupies part of that day — often the morning. Tradition holds that the raksha sutra must not be tied during Bhadra. The rakhi is tied after Bhadra ends, ideally in the aparahna (afternoon) or pradosh (early evening) window.

Check a panchang for the Bhadra end time in your own city before fixing the hour. Sunrise and tithi timings shift across India, so a muhurat published for Delhi is not automatically correct for Chennai or Ahmedabad.

How to Perform the Rakhi Ceremony

1. Prepare the thali. Arrange the rakhi, roli, akshat, diya and sweets. Use the decorative roli-akshat containers so the thali looks the part.
2. Light the diya. Begin with a short prayer for the family's wellbeing.
3. Apply tilak. Roli or chandan on the brother's forehead, then press akshat over it. He sits facing east or north; she faces him.
4. Perform aarti. Circle the lit diya before him with the Bhimseni kapoor.
5. Tie the rakhi on his right wrist, with a prayer for his long life and protection.
6. Offer sweets. She feeds him mishri, batasha or panchmeva; he feeds her one in return.
7. Exchange blessings. He gives his gift and makes his vow of protection. Both touch the feet of the elders present.

Exact customs differ by family and region.

Sending Rakhi to Another City

The kit is packed to travel and to be opened as a gift. If you cannot be there yourself, the box arrives with the thali already assembled — the rakhi, the tilak samagri, the diya, the vidhi card and a blessing card for you to write on — so whoever is with him can set the thali properly, or he can keep it until you call.
