Maa Aur Aane Wale Shishu Ke Liye Shubh Aashirwad.
Godh Bharai means, literally, filling the lap. In the seventh or eighth month the married women of the family gather around the expecting mother, apply haldi and kumkum, drape the chunri, slide bangles onto her wrists, and fill her lap with coconut, fruit, dry fruits, sweets and grain — each woman offering a blessing as she does. The Advik Rituals Baby Shower (Godh Bharai) Pooja Kit carries 35 ceremony essentials, curated in Kashi, for exactly that afternoon.
Why 35 Items, Not 61
We could have padded this box. Adding twenty-six one-rupee sachets would let us print a bigger number on the label, and plenty of sellers do it.
We did not, because Godh Bharai is not a samagri-heavy ritual. There is no havan, no kalash sthapana, no navgrah offering. The centre of this ceremony is the mother — her tilak, her aarti, her bangles, her chunri, and the lap that gets filled. Every one of these 35 items is something a hand actually touches on the day. Count what a kit does, not what it lists.

What You Arrange Fresh or Locally
The heart of the lap-filling is fresh, and it should be. These would not survive shipping and their quantity depends entirely on how many guests you are hosting:
Fresh coconut • Paan leaves • Fresh flowers and gajra • Seasonal fruit • Bananas • Fresh mithai • Milk • Fresh prasad • Ghee or puja oil • Saree or outfit for the mother • Gifts and jewellery • Dakshina
The kit includes two dry coconuts for the ritual offerings; the fresh coconut used in the lap-filling itself is best bought the morning of the ceremony.
How Godh Bharai Is Performed
- Hold the ceremony in the seventh or eighth month, on a day chosen by the family or with a panchang.
- Seat the mother-to-be facing east on a decorated seat, dressed in new clothes.
- Begin with a short Ganesh puja for the removal of obstacles, then invoke the family deity.
- The eldest married woman applies haldi and kumkum tilak to her forehead and offers akshat.
- Drape the Godh Bharai chunri over her head and shoulders, and slide the glass bangles onto her wrists.
- Spread the aanchal cloth across her lap.
- Each married woman fills the lap in turn — coconut, fruit, dry fruits, batasha, mishri and a token gift — offering her blessing as she does.
- Perform aarti with the clay diya and Bhimseni kapoor. Circle it before her, then before her lap.
- Distribute shagun envelopes and blessing cards, and eat together. The mother-to-be is traditionally served her favourite foods.
The Blessing Cards
Five printed cards are included for the women present to write a line to the mother, or to the child, before handing them over. Families keep them. Years later they are the part of the day that still exists — a small thing to include, and the one people write to us about.
Godh Bharai, Seemantham, Valaikappu, Shrimanta
Prenatal celebrations run across India under different names and with genuinely different customs. Seemantonnayana is the Vedic samskara; Valaikappu and Seemantham in Tamil Nadu centre on bangles and are far more elaborate; Shrimanta in Maharashtra, Shaad in Bengal and Sadar in Punjab each have their own form. Some involve a havan; many do not.
This kit is built for the North Indian Godh Bharai. If your family keeps Valaikappu, Seemantham or another regional tradition, go through the item list on this page with your elders first — the garments, bangle counts and ritual objects can differ substantially.
