Mehendi is not a havan. It is shringar and ritual together — the bride's hands and feet decorated as part of the Solah Shringaar, an elder applying the first stroke, bangles and chunri given, and then the evening turns celebratory. Building a heavy puja box around it, with samidha and havan cups, would miss what the ceremony actually is.

Why There Are No Ready-Made Cones in This Box

This is deliberate, and we would rather explain it than quietly ship two anonymous cones to make the item count look bigger.

Safety. Mehendi is a skin-contact product, which is a different order of responsibility from roli, akshat or kapoor. The cheap "instant" cones sold in many markets — often marketed as black henna — can contain para-phenylenediamine (PPD), a dye that causes chemical burns, blistering and lasting sensitisation in some people. Until we have a cone supplier with a full ingredient declaration and batch and expiry traceability, we will not put one in a box with our name on it.

And freshness. Henna stains through lawsone, and lawsone degrades with time and heat. A cone that has sat in a warehouse through a summer gives a weaker, more orange stain than paste mixed on the day. Powder is not the compromise here — it is the better product. Fresh paste is what professional artists insist on, and it is why this kit includes a mixing bowl and a wooden spatula rather than a shortcut.

You mix it once, the night before. It takes five minutes.

How to Mix the Paste

1. Sieve the mehendi powder into the bowl to remove grit — this is what separates a smooth line from a scratchy one.
2. Add warm water a little at a time, stirring with the wooden spatula, until it reaches the consistency of thick yoghurt.
3. Add a spoon of lemon juice and a spoon of sugar. Lemon helps release the dye; sugar keeps the paste sticky so it clings while it works.
4. Cover and rest it for six to twelve hours at room temperature. This is the dye-release stage and it cannot be rushed.
5. Stir once before use. If it has thickened, loosen it with a few drops of water.

Getting a Dark Stain

The colour deepens over 24 to 48 hours after the paste is removed, so apply mehendi at least a full day before the wedding — two is better.

• Leave the paste on six to eight hours. Overnight is better if the bride can manage it.
• Do not wash it off. Scrape it away dry, then seal with mustard oil or clove smoke.
• Keep the hands warm and avoid water for the first twelve hours.
• Warmth deepens the stain; air conditioning works against it.

What the Ubtan Is For

The 100 g of traditional ubtan is applied before the mehendi, not after. Clean, exfoliated skin takes a noticeably darker stain than skin carrying oil or lotion, which is why ubtan and mehendi have always been sold together by wedding suppliers. It also does the job it is better known for — brightening the skin before the wedding days.

The Ceremony Sequence

1. Setup. Arrange the mehendi, haldi, kumkum, akshat, diya and shagun items on the thali, using the roli-akshat containers.
2. Ganesh or ishta dev blessings. Begin with your family's customary prayers before the bridal ceremony.
3. Tilak and mauli. Elders apply an auspicious tilak and tie mauli according to family tradition.
4. The first mehendi. A married woman of the family — the bride's mother, aunt or sister-in-law — applies the first dot or design to her palm before the artist begins the full work.
5. Suhag and shagun. Present the glass bangles, the green chunri, the shagun potli and envelopes.
6. Aarti. Perform aarti with the clay diya and Bhimseni kapoor where customary.
7. Blessings and celebration. The elders bless the bride, and the larger mehendi celebration begins.
