Ganpati Sthapana Vidhi at Home: Step-by-Step Guide for 2026

Most families performing Ganesh Chaturthi at home are not working from a book. They are working from memory, from what a grandparent did, and from whatever the pandit said last year. That works — but the sequence is easy to lose, and the parts most often dropped are the ones that matter: the sankalp, the pranapratishtha, and the uttar puja before visarjan.

This is the full sequence for a home sthapana in 2026, written to be followed on the day.

Before the day

  1. Fix the muhurat. Sthapana is traditionally done in the madhyahna period (midday), as Ganesha is believed to have been born then. Timings shift by city with sunrise — confirm yours against a local panchang.
  2. Decide how many days you are observing — 1.5, 3, 5, 7 or the full 10 to Anant Chaturdashi. This decides how much samagri you need.
  3. Clean the house, especially the room where the murti will sit.
  4. Set up the place — chowki, cloth, toran at the doorway, rangoli at the entrance.
  5. Gather the samagri. See the complete Ganesh Chaturthi samagri list.

Step 1 — Preparing the seat

Bathe before beginning. Face east or north where possible. Spread the red or yellow cloth over the chowki and place a small heap of akshat where the murti will sit — the murti is never placed directly on bare wood.

Step 2 — Kalash sthapana

  1. Fill the kalash with clean water and a little gangajal.
  2. Add akshat, a supari and a coin.
  3. Tie kalava around the neck — three, five or seven turns.
  4. Arrange five or seven mango leaves around the mouth, tips outward.
  5. Place the coconut, wrapped in red cloth, on top.
  6. Apply a swastik and haldi-kumkum tilak to the body of the kalash.

Step 3 — Sankalp

Take water, akshat and a flower in the right palm. State your name, gotra, place and the reason for the puja, and the number of days you intend to observe. Release the water at the end.

The sankalp is the step most often skipped and it is the one that formally begins the observance. Do not skip it.

Step 4 — Pranapratishtha

Install the murti on the akshat with both hands. Pranapratishtha is the invocation that invites the deity to reside in the murti for the duration of the festival — recite the mantras from your vidhi booklet, touching the heart of the murti with durva dipped in water.

From this moment the murti is treated as a guest in the house, not as an object. That is the reason for the daily bathing, dressing, feeding and the formal farewell at the end.

Step 5 — Shodashopachara: the sixteen offerings

The classical home puja is a sequence of sixteen services. In order:

  1. Avahan — invocation
  2. Asan — offering a seat
  3. Padya — water to wash the feet
  4. Arghya — water for the hands
  5. Achaman — water to sip
  6. Snan / abhishek — bathing, with panchamrit then clean water
  7. Vastra — offering cloth
  8. Yagyopavit — offering the sacred thread
  9. Gandha — chandan, kumkum and haldi tilak
  10. Pushpa — flowers, and 21 durva
  11. Dhoop — incense
  12. Deep — the lamp
  13. Naivedya — modak and bhog
  14. Tambulam — paan and supari
  15. Dakshina — the offering
  16. Aarti and pradakshina — camphor aarti and circumambulation

Close with pushpanjali and the Ganesh mantra: Om Gan Ganapataye Namah.

The durva offering

Durva is offered in 21 blades, tied in bunches of three, placed on the murti while chanting the names of Ganesha. Of everything in the vidhi, this is the offering most specifically his — and there is no accepted substitute.

Never offer tulsi

Tulsi is one of the very few offerings traditionally forbidden in Ganesha worship. If your samagri list includes tulsi patra, leave it out. The reason is here.

Daily worship through the festival

Each day until visarjan, morning and evening:

  1. Abhishek with panchamrit, then clean water
  2. Sindoor or chandan tilak
  3. Fresh durva and red hibiscus
  4. Modak or the day’s bhog
  5. Deep, dhoop and aarti with camphor
  6. Ganesh aarti — Sukhkarta Dukhharta — and pushpanjali

Keep the kalash topped up. The lamp is traditionally kept burning through the festival where the household can attend to it safely.

Short on time? The Advik Rituals Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Kit carries the samagri side of this list in one box — 21 durva, red hibiscus and marigold garland, panchamrit for daily abhishek, modak bhog samagri, kalash with coconut and mango leaves, and a vidhi booklet. Hand-packed in Kashi (Varanasi).

Uttar puja — the step almost everyone skips

On the final morning, before the murti is moved, perform the uttar puja: a last aarti, a last naivedya, and a formal request for forgiveness for any lapse in hospitality during the stay — anything forgotten, anything done incorrectly.

Only after the uttar puja is the murti moved. Moving it without this is the single most common mistake in home Ganesh Chaturthi.

Visarjan at home

  1. Complete the uttar puja.
  2. Move the murti gently, lifting it by the base — never by the trunk or arms.
  3. Fill a large bucket or drum with clean water.
  4. Lower the idol in and let it dissolve. A natural clay idol takes a few hours.
  5. Pour the clay water at the root of a tree or into the garden.
  6. Compost the flowers and nirmalya separately — keep them out of the water.

Say Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya — come again soon next year.

Home visarjan is only possible with a clay idol. Plaster of Paris does not dissolve. Our eco-friendly clay Ganesh idols are made for immersion at home.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the sankalp, and so never formally beginning
  • Offering tulsi
  • Forgetting durva, or offering an arbitrary number of blades
  • Moving the murti without the uttar puja
  • Lifting a clay idol by the trunk
  • Running out of camphor and wicks by day four
  • Immersing flowers and nirmalya along with the idol
