Why clay, and why it matters

Plaster of Paris does not dissolve. A POP idol immersed in a lake sits on the bed for months, and the chemical paints on it leach into the water. Several Indian states now restrict POP idols for exactly this reason, and many housing societies have stopped allowing them at all.

A natural clay Ganesh dissolves in water within hours. It can be immersed at home in a bucket or drum, and the clay water poured into a garden or a plant — which is how visarjan was performed for centuries before POP existed.

Details

  • Natural clay (shadu / mitti) construction
  • 4–6 inch height — sized for a home mandir or apartment Ganpati
  • Dissolves in water, suitable for home visarjan
  • Hand-finished, so small variations between pieces are normal

How to do visarjan at home

  1. Perform the closing aarti and the uttar puja, and ask Bappa’s forgiveness for any lapse in the observance.
  2. Fill a large bucket or drum with clean water.
  3. Lower the idol in gently and let it dissolve — usually a few hours.
  4. Pour the clay water at the root of a tree or into the garden.
  5. Keep the flowers and nirmalya out of the water and compost them separately.

Handling

Clay is more fragile than POP or resin, particularly at the trunk and the fingers. Lift the idol by the base, never by the trunk or arms, and keep it dry until visarjan.

Ideal for

Home Ganesh Chaturthi, apartment and society Ganpati, Dedh Din and 5-day observances, school and office Ganpati, and households required to use non-POP idols.
