The only diya that leaves nothing behind

A clay diya is reused or eventually discarded. A wax tealight leaves an aluminium cup. A gobar diya burns down with the flame and leaves only ash — which can go straight into the garden.

Cow dung has been used in Hindu ritual and household practice for millennia: to purify the floor before a puja, in havan, and in the making of upla. Using it for the Diwali lamp is a return to that, not a novelty.

Details

  • Pack of 12 cow dung diyas
  • Fully biodegradable — burns to ash, no residue to dispose of
  • No soaking required, unlike clay
  • Takes ghee or oil with a cotton wick

How they differ from clay diyas

  • No soaking needed — fill and light straight away.
  • Single use — they are consumed by the flame rather than reused.
  • No disposal — the ash goes into the garden or a plant pot.
  • Lighter — easier to place on ledges and railings.

How to use

  1. Place on a heat-safe surface — the diya itself will burn, so never on cloth, wood or a painted ledge.
  2. Fill with ghee or oil and add a cotton wick.
  3. Light and leave undisturbed.
  4. Let it burn out completely and cool before clearing the ash.
  5. Scatter the cooled ash in the garden or a plant pot.

A note on smell

Properly made and fully dried gobar diyas have a faint earthy smell when cold and burn without an unpleasant odour. Store them dry — damp is what causes any smell.

Ideal for

Eco-conscious Diwali, Dev Deepawali, Karthik month, gaushala-supporting households, temple offerings, and societies restricting non-biodegradable decor.

No. That is one of their practical advantages - fill with oil or ghee, add a wick and light straight away.

No. They are consumed by the flame and burn down to ash, which is the point. There is nothing left to wash or store.

Scatter it in the garden or a plant pot once cooled. It is fully biodegradable, which is why there is no disposal step.

On a heat-safe surface only. The diya itself burns, so never on cloth, wood or a painted ledge.

Cow dung is treated as sacred in Hindu tradition and has long been used to purify the floor before puja, in havan, and in making upla. Using it for the Diwali lamp follows that practice.
