Plain Clay Diya - Pack of 12
12 plain terracotta clay diyas — the traditional mitti diya, hand-thrown and unglazed.
The lamp Diwali is actually meant to be lit with, and the one that supports a potter rather than a factory.

Why clay, still
Electric string lights are easier. But the clay diya is what Deepavali means — a row of small earthen lamps, lit by hand, at the threshold. It is also, quietly, one of the last direct links between a festival and the potter’s wheel in the next town.
Details
- Pack of 12 plain clay diyas
- Unglazed terracotta, hand-thrown
- Takes ghee, oil or a ready ghee wick
- Small natural variations in size and shape
Soak them first — this is the step everyone skips
Unglazed terracotta is porous. A dry diya will absorb your oil straight into the clay, run dry in minutes, and leave an oil ring on the floor.
- Soak the diyas in water for 2–3 hours before use.
- Take them out and let them dry fully on the outside.
- The clay is now saturated with water, so it will not drink your oil.
- Then fill with oil or ghee and add the wick.
This one step is the difference between a diya that burns for hours and one that dies in fifteen minutes.
Lighting them
- Use a round cotton wick — flat diyas have no rim for a long wick to rest on.
- Fill with oil or ghee until the wick is soaked, tip standing dry.
- Place on a heat-safe surface, never directly on cloth or a wooden threshold.
- Let them burn out rather than blowing them out.
Reusing them
Clay diyas can be washed and reused for years. Soak, scrub off the old residue, dry, and store in a dry place. Chipped diyas are traditionally not reused for puja.
Ideal for
Diwali and Deepavali, Karthik month, Dev Deepawali, Navratri, temple offerings, and floating in an urli.
