For the diyas people actually look at

Most Diwali lighting is plain diyas by the dozen, lined along a wall. Designer diyas are the few that sit where they are seen — at the centre of the rangoli, on the puja thali, on the entrance step, in the photographs.

Details

  • Pack of 6 hand-painted clay diyas
  • Traditional motifs in festive colours
  • Hand-decorated — each piece differs slightly
  • Takes ghee, oil or a ready ghee wick

Preparing them

Painted diyas are usually sealed on the outside, but the inside well is generally still porous.

  1. Soak only the inside well with a little water for an hour rather than submerging the whole diya — submerging can lift the paint.
  2. Pour out and let the surface dry.
  3. Fill with oil or ghee and add a round cotton wick.

Styling

  • At the four corners and centre of a rangoli
  • On the puja thali for aarti
  • On the entrance step, spaced rather than in a row
  • Grouped in threes on a tray as a centrepiece
  • Around the base of an urli

Care

Wipe rather than scrub — hand-painted decoration will lift under a scouring pad. Store wrapped in paper so the painted surfaces do not rub against each other.

Ideal for

Diwali decor and rangoli, festive gifting and return gifts, puja thali decoration, wedding and reception decor, and griha pravesh.

Only the inside well, with a little water for about an hour. Do not submerge the whole diya - it can lift the painted decoration.

No. They are hand-painted, so colours and motifs vary slightly between pieces. That is the nature of handwork.

Yes, but wipe rather than scrub. A scouring pad will lift the paint. Store them wrapped in paper so the painted surfaces do not rub together.

A round cotton wick, the same as plain clay diyas.

Yes - designer diya packs are one of the most common Diwali gifts and return gifts, since they are decorative as well as functional.

The flame sits in the well and the decoration is on the outside, so normal use is fine. Avoid overfilling so oil does not run down the painted surface.
