What havan samagri actually is

Havan samagri is not one ingredient. It is a blend — traditionally of dried herbs, roots, bark, aromatic woods, seeds, dried fruit and resins — each offered into the fire with the mantra and the word svaha. The blend is what produces the characteristic havan smoke, and the reason a real havan smells nothing like burning incense.

Cheap samagri is bulked with sawdust and sprayed with synthetic fragrance. It smells right for thirty seconds and then smells like burning wood. Ours is blended without filler or added fragrance.

How much you actually need

• 200 g — a short home havan, a small grah shanti, a personal sankalp
• 500 g — a full household havan such as Satyanarayan or Navratri
• 1–2 kg — griha pravesh, Vivah, or any havan with a pandit and guests

If in doubt, ask your pandit before the day. Running short mid-havan is the one thing you cannot fix on the spot.

How it is offered

1. Establish the fire in a havan kund with samidha, lit using camphor and ghee.
2. Take a small quantity of samagri in the right hand, or use the offering spoon.
3. Offer into the fire at each svaha, adding a little ghee with it.
4. Close with purnahuti and let the fire burn down naturally.

Storage

Keep sealed in a cool, dry place. Havan samagri absorbs moisture, and damp samagri smokes heavily instead of burning cleanly.

Safety and ventilation

Perform havan in a well-ventilated space with a heat-safe base under the kund, water kept nearby, and clearance from curtains and low ceilings. Never leave a lit havan unattended.
