The resin behind the temple smell
Guggal is the hardened resin of the Commiphora wightii tree. It has been used in Indian ritual for millennia — offered in havan, burned as dhoop, and used to purify a space. It is the single ingredient most responsible for what people recognise as "the temple smell".
Sold as raw resin it looks unimpressive: irregular brownish lumps, sticky in the heat, dusty in the cold. That is what it should look like. Uniform pellets usually mean it has been blended with a binder.
Details
- 50 g pure guggal resin in natural lump form
- No binders, fillers or added fragrance
- For havan offerings and for burning as dhoop on charcoal
- Deep, warm, resinous fragrance
Two ways to use it
In havan
- Add a small quantity along with the havan samagri at each offering.
- Guggal is potent — a little at a time, not by the handful.
As dhoop
- Light a charcoal disc and wait until it greys over completely.
- Place a small piece of guggal on the charcoal.
- It will melt and smoke immediately. Add more only when the smoke thins.
- Use a metal dhoop burner on a heat-safe surface.
If you would rather not manage charcoal, our guggal dhoop sticks give the same fragrance in a ready-to-light form.
Storage
Guggal softens and becomes sticky in heat and absorbs moisture in humidity. Keep it in a closed container in a cool place; a little dusting of the container prevents lumps fusing together.
Safety
Charcoal and burning resin get extremely hot. Use a proper metal burner on a heat-safe base, ventilate the room, and keep well away from children and pets.
