Loban in its real form

Most loban sold today is a cone or a cup with a charcoal base built in — convenient, and perfectly good. But raw loban resin is the original: pale crystalline chunks of benzoin, burned a pinch at a time on hot charcoal.

The difference is control and intensity. Raw resin on charcoal gives a fuller, sweeter smoke than any pre-formed cone, and you decide exactly how much and for how long.

Details

  • 100 g pure loban (benzoin) resin in natural crystal form
  • No binders, no charcoal base, no added fragrance
  • Sweet, warm, balsamic smoke
  • Requires charcoal and a dhoop burner

How to burn it

  1. Light a charcoal disc in a metal burner and wait until it is fully greyed over — usually a few minutes. Resin placed on black charcoal will smother it.
  2. Drop a pinch of loban crystals onto the charcoal.
  3. It melts and smokes immediately, and the smoke is dense.
  4. Add more only when the smoke thins. A pinch at a time is genuinely enough.
  5. To purify a home, carry the burner — not the resin — slowly room to room.

When loban is traditionally burned

At dusk, after cleaning the house, after illness, before a puja, at griha pravesh, and in many households as a weekly practice on a fixed day.

Storage

Keep in a closed container in a cool, dry place. Benzoin softens in heat and the crystals fuse into a single block if left warm.

Safety

Charcoal reaches very high temperatures and the burner stays dangerously hot long after the smoke stops. Use a heat-safe base, never place the burner on cloth, wood or marble, ventilate the room, and keep well away from children and pets.

Cones have a charcoal base built in and are ready to light. Raw resin needs separate charcoal but gives a fuller, denser smoke and lets you control exactly how much you burn.

Resin dropped onto black, still-lighting charcoal smothers it and produces acrid smoke instead of fragrance. Wait until the disc is greyed over across its surface.

A pinch. Loban smoke is dense and a small quantity fills a room. Add more only once the smoke thins.

Both are benzoin resin. Sambrani is the South Indian name, commonly sold as ready-to-light cups; loban is the northern name and is more often sold as resin or cones.

Heat. Benzoin softens and the crystals fuse if stored warm. Keep it in a closed container in a cool place - you can break the block up and use it normally.

With ventilation and a proper metal burner on a heat-safe base, yes. The burner stays extremely hot long after the smoke stops, so keep it clear of children, pets and any surface that can scorch.
