Griha Pravesh is not simply a housewarming. In the Vedic tradition, it is a ceremony of purification, invocation, and consecration — the act of making a new physical space sacred, of inviting the divine to reside alongside the family that will live there. Performed correctly, it sets a foundation of auspiciousness for everything that follows in that home.
Getting it right matters. And getting it right begins with the samagri.
This guide covers everything your Griha Pravesh puja kit must contain, the correct ritual sequence as practised by Kashi pandits, and what to watch for when choosing a kit online.
What is Griha Pravesh? The Ritual in Brief
Griha Pravesh literally means “entering the house.” It is a Vedic ceremony performed before a family occupies a new home for the first time — whether newly built, newly purchased, or newly renovated after a major event. There are three types of Griha Pravesh recognised in the Vedic tradition:
- Apoorva: entering a new home for the first time
- Sapoorva: re-entering a home after a period of absence (such as after a death in the family)
- Dwandwah: re-entering after a home has been rebuilt or substantially renovated
The most common is Apoorva — the ceremony performed when a family enters their new home for the first time. This is what this guide covers.

The Correct Griha Pravesh Ritual Sequence
The order of a Griha Pravesh ceremony is not arbitrary. Kashi pandits follow a specific sequence in which each element prepares for the next.
- Sankalp: The family states their intention and the purpose of the ceremony. The pandit (or senior family member performing the puja) speaks the sankalp aloud, naming the family, the location, and the occasion.
- Gauri Ganesha Puja: Ganesha is invoked first in every Vedic ceremony — he removes obstacles and ensures the ceremony proceeds without interruption.
- Kalash Sthapana: The sacred kalash is established as the seat of the divine presence for the ceremony. Mango leaves, coconut, and water with Ganga jal are assembled. The kalash represents the universe and invites divine energy into the space.
- Navgrah Puja: The nine planetary forces are pacified and invited to bless the new home. This is particularly important for Griha Pravesh as the planetary positions at the time of entry are considered auspicious or inauspicious.
- Vastu Puja: The deity of the built structure — Vastu Purusha — is invoked and appeased. This purifies any inauspicious energy that may have accumulated during construction or renovation.
- Havan (Yagna): The fire ritual purifies the space at the deepest level. The smoke of the havan samagri carries prayers throughout every corner of the home. The pandit chants specific mantras for household prosperity, health, and protection.
- Lakshmi Puja: Maa Lakshmi is specifically invited to reside in the new home, bringing prosperity and abundance.
- Griha Pravesh — The Threshold Ritual: The lady of the house carries a kalash of rice and enters the home first, her right foot crossing the threshold. At the entrance, Ganga jal is sprinkled on the threshold. Rangoli decorates the entrance. This is the central symbolic act of the ceremony.
- Doodh Ubalna: Milk is boiled in the new kitchen until it overflows — a symbol of abundance flowing into the home. The overflow direction is noted (should flow north or east for auspiciousness).
- Aarti and Prasad Distribution: The ceremony closes with aarti to Ganesha and Lakshmi, followed by distribution of prasad to all present.
What to Look for in a Griha Pravesh Puja Kit Online
A Griha Pravesh ceremony has a larger samagri requirement than most standard puja kits. Many kits sold online as “Griha Pravesh kits” are significantly incomplete. Before purchasing, verify:
- Is the havan samagri included? Many kits omit this entirely. A Griha Pravesh without havan is incomplete by traditional standards.
- Are navgrah puja items present? Nine small diyas and navgrah samagri are often absent from cheap kits.
- Is the kalash fully equipped? Mango leaves, coconut, mauli, and the cloth base must all be present.
- Is the camphor bhimseni? Check that the kit specifies bhimseni camphor — not just “camphor.”
- Is the vidhi ceremony-specific? The vidhi for Griha Pravesh covers 10 distinct steps. A generic puja guide is not sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most important item in a Griha Pravesh puja kit?
The kalash is considered the most sacred item — it is the seat of the divine presence for the ceremony. After that, the havan samagri and navgrah materials are most often missing from incomplete kits and most often noted by pandits as essential. The camphor quality (bhimseni only) matters for the aarti.
Can Griha Pravesh be performed without a pandit?
Traditionally, Griha Pravesh involves a pandit for the mantras, havan, and navgrah puja. However, a simplified Griha Pravesh can be performed by the family using a detailed vidhi. The Advik Rituals kit includes a complete vidhi for both scenarios. For the full traditional ceremony, we recommend engaging a pandit — WhatsApp us at +91 92503 03205 and we can help connect you.
What is the best day for Griha Pravesh?
Griha Pravesh must be performed on an auspicious muhurta (date and time) determined by the Hindu calendar — typically a Shukla Paksha (waxing moon fortnight) day, avoiding certain constellations and planetary positions. A pandit should be consulted to determine the correct muhurta for your location and family details.
