Satyanarayan Puja Samagri: Complete List & Vidhi by Kashi Pandits

The Satyanarayan Katha is one of the most widely performed pujas across Hindu households — whether for a new home, a business milestone, a wedding, or a monthly vrat. Yet despite its popularity, getting the samagri right is where most families struggle. Items sourced from local markets are often adulterated, incomplete, or missing the specific grades of materials that Vedic texts prescribe.

At Advik Rituals, our Satyanarayan puja kits are curated by practising pandits from Kashi (Varanasi) — the spiritual heart of India. Below is the complete samagri list and a step-by-step vidhi guide they follow.

Why Satyanarayan Puja Samagri from Kashi Matters

Kashi has been the centre of Vedic scholarship for over 3,000 years. Pandits here follow the Skanda Purana and Reva Khanda protocols for Satyanarayan Katha — which specify not just what items to use, but their grade, quantity, and preparation method. Panchamrit must use raw cow's milk — not processed milk — and the tulsi must be freshly picked, not dried.

When you source samagri from Kashi, you are sourcing from the same tradition that has performed this puja continuously for millennia.

Satyanarayan Puja Vidhi: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Sankalp (Resolve)

Begin by stating your sankalp — your intent and occasion for the puja. The family head holds akshat and flowers while the pandit recites the sankalp mantra. This formally initiates the puja.

Step 2: Ganesh Puja & Kalash Sthapna

All Vedic pujas begin with inviting Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles. The kalash is then established as the seat of divine energy — filled with water, mango leaves, and topped with a coconut.

Step 3: Navgraha Puja

Offerings are made to the nine planetary deities to neutralise any astrological obstacles during the puja.

Step 4: Satyanarayan Abhishek

The idol or image is bathed with panchamrit (milk, ghee, honey, curd, sugar), then with Gangajal. This is followed by applying chandan, kumkum, and fresh flowers.

Step 5: Satyanarayan Katha (5 Chapters)

The Katha from the Skanda Purana is recited in five parts, narrating the stories of devotees who performed and benefited from this puja. The family listens with folded hands. Between each chapter, prasad is offered.

Step 6: Aarti & Prasad Distribution

The puja concludes with aarti using camphor and ghee diyas, followed by distribution of the sheera (wheat halwa) prasad mixed with banana and tulsi. This prasad must never be refused — an important tradition from the Katha itself.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using processed milk for panchamrit — always use raw cow's milk.
  • Dried tulsi instead of fresh — tulsi must be freshly picked before the puja.
  • Skipping banana in prasad — the Skanda Purana specifically mentions banana as essential. Omitting it is considered inauspicious.
  • Artificial fragrance dhoop — use pure cow dung or herb-based dhoop, not synthetic incense.
