Brass Camphor Aarti Holder (Kapoor Dani)

Camphor burns hotter than people expect

Camphor ignites instantly and burns at a high temperature with an open flame. Doing the closing aarti on a shallow plate or a thin holder means either a burnt hand or a rushed aarti. A kapoor dani has the depth and the handle length to do it properly.

How to use it

1. Place one or two camphor tablets in the bowl.
2. Light and let the flame establish before lifting.
3. Circle clockwise before the deity, traditionally three, five or seven times.
4. Let the camphor burn out completely — pure camphor leaves no residue.
5. Let the holder cool fully before wiping.

Safety

Camphor flames are hot and can flare. Keep it clear of curtains, cloth and hair, do not add fresh camphor to a burning holder, and never carry it over a child’s head. Ventilate the room during and after the aarti.

Caring for brass

1. Wipe dry after each use to remove ghee, oil and camphor residue.
2. Clean weekly with tamarind pulp, lemon and salt, or a mild brass cleaner.
3. Dry fully before returning it to the mandir — trapped moisture causes spotting.
4. Brass darkens naturally into a patina. Many households polish only before Diwali.
