The bowl at the entrance
The urli began as a South Indian cooking vessel and became the classic entrance piece — a shallow brass bowl filled with water, marigold or rose petals, and a few floating diyas. It reads as welcome, and at Diwali and Onam it does more decorative work than any other single object in the house.
Details
- Handcrafted brass with lotus detailing
- Wide, shallow form designed for floating flowers and tealights
- Traditional finish that deepens with age
- Suitable for the entrance, courtyard, mandir or centre table
How to style it
- Fill with clean water to about two-thirds depth.
- Float marigold, rose or jasmine petals across the surface.
- Add floating tealight diyas — three, five or seven is the usual count.
- Change the water every day or two so it stays clear.
- For a dry arrangement, fill with rose petals alone and set clay diyas around the rim.
Caring for brass
- Wipe dry after each use to remove ghee, oil and camphor residue.
- Clean weekly with tamarind pulp, lemon and salt, or a mild brass cleaner.
- Dry fully before returning it to the mandir — trapped moisture causes spotting.
- Brass darkens naturally into a patina. Many households polish only before Diwali.
Ideal for
Diwali and Onam decor, entrance and foyer styling, wedding and reception decor, griha pravesh and housewarming gifts, and hotel and reception spaces.
