The set every formal puja assumes you have

Achman — taking water three times before the sankalp — opens almost every Hindu ritual. The panchpatra holds that water, the achmani spoon lifts it, and the small plate catches it. Without them the pandit improvises with a steel glass, which works but is not what the vidhi describes.

What the set includes

  • Panchpatra — the water vessel
  • Achmani — the small spoon for lifting water
  • Base plate / stand
  • Solid brass throughout, traditional finish

How it is used

  1. Fill the panchpatra with clean water, adding a little gangajal.
  2. Take water in the achmani and perform achman three times before the sankalp.
  3. Use it through the puja for jal offerings, tarpan and to moisten the tilak.
  4. Empty and dry it after the ritual rather than leaving standing water in the vessel.

Caring for brass

  1. Wipe dry after each use to remove ghee, oil and camphor residue.
  2. Clean weekly with tamarind pulp, lemon and salt, or a mild brass cleaner.
  3. Dry fully before returning it to the mandir — trapped moisture causes spotting.
  4. Brass darkens naturally into a patina. Many households polish only before Diwali.

Ideal for

Satyanarayan katha, Navratri, griha pravesh and Vastu Shanti, Vivah, havan, shraddh and tarpan, and any puja performed with a pandit.

It holds the water used for achman and for jal offerings during puja. The achmani spoon lifts water from it.

A brass panchpatra vessel, an achmani spoon and a base plate or stand.

Not strictly - many households use a small steel glass. But if you perform Satyanarayan, griha pravesh or any puja with a pandit, this is the vessel set the vidhi assumes.

No. Empty and dry it after each ritual. Standing water causes tarnish inside the vessel and is not considered ritually clean.

Yes, a panchpatra set is included in the Wedding, Navratri, Satyanarayan, Grih Pravesh, Diwali and Mahashivratri kits. This is for households buying it on its own or replacing one.
