Why the bell is rung
The ghanti is rung at the start of the puja and during the aarti. Tradition holds that the sound invites the deity’s presence, and that its resonance settles the mind of everyone present before the ritual begins. Practically, it also marks the beginning and end of the aarti for a room full of family.

How it is used
- Ring at the start of the puja, before the sankalp.
- Ring continuously in the left hand while circling the aarti lamp with the right.
- Ring at the close, before pushpanjali and pranam.
Caring for brass
- Wipe dry after each use to remove ghee, oil and camphor residue.
- Clean weekly with tamarind pulp, lemon and salt, or a mild brass cleaner.
- Dry fully before returning it to the mandir — trapped moisture causes spotting.
- Brass darkens naturally into a patina. Many households polish only before Diwali.
