The lamp that gets lit every day

Most mandirs own one diya that is used morning and evening, every day of the year. It needs to be stable, easy to clean, and safe to hold during aarti. That is the job this one is built for.

Details

  • Solid brass, traditional polished finish
  • Small size — suited to a single cotton wick
  • Weighted base for stability on a chowki or thali
  • Lipped rim to contain ghee and oil
  • Takes ghee, sesame oil, mustard oil or a multi-oil blend

How to use it

  1. Place a cotton wick with the tip resting on the rim.
  2. Add ghee or oil until the wick is soaked but the bowl is not overfull.
  3. Light the tip and place the diya on the thali or chowki, never directly on cloth.
  4. Let it burn out rather than blowing it out — blowing on a puja flame is traditionally avoided.

Caring for brass

  1. Wipe dry after each use to remove ghee, oil and camphor residue.
  2. Clean weekly with tamarind pulp, lemon and salt, or a mild brass cleaner.
  3. Dry fully before returning it to the mandir — trapped moisture causes spotting.
  4. Brass darkens naturally into a patina. Many households polish only before Diwali.

Ideal for

Daily home aarti, mandir use, Diwali, Navratri, satsang, and as part of a puja thali set.

Solid brass, not plated steel. It develops a natural patina with use.

Yes. It takes ghee, sesame oil, mustard oil or a blended puja lamp oil equally well.

Wipe it dry while still slightly warm, then clean weekly with tamarind pulp, lemon and salt or a mild brass cleaner. Dry fully before storing.

A standard round or long cotton wick. One wick per diya is the usual practice for this size.

Yes, though brass conducts heat. Hold it by the base rim or place it on a thali for a long aarti.
