Five flames, one lamp

The panchmukhi diya carries five wicks at once. The five flames are traditionally associated with the pancha mahabhuta — earth, water, fire, air and space — and the lamp is used for the fuller aarti performed on festival days rather than the single-wick daily lamp.

Details

  • Solid brass, traditional finish
  • Five wick faces arranged around a central oil well
  • Handle for circling during aarti
  • Weighted base for resting between rounds
  • Takes ghee or puja lamp oil

How to use it

  1. Place one cotton wick in each of the five faces, tips outward.
  2. Fill the central well with ghee or oil until all five wicks are soaked.
  3. Light all five, then circle clockwise before the deity — traditionally three, five or seven times.
  4. Rest it on the thali between rounds; brass conducts heat quickly.

Caring for brass

  1. Wipe dry after each use to remove ghee, oil and camphor residue.
  2. Clean weekly with tamarind pulp, lemon and salt, or a mild brass cleaner.
  3. Dry fully before returning it to the mandir — trapped moisture causes spotting.
  4. Brass darkens naturally into a patina. Many households polish only before Diwali.

Ideal for

Diwali and Lakshmi puja, Navratri aarti, Ganesh Chaturthi, Satyanarayan puja, temple and satsang aarti, and griha pravesh gifting.

Five-faced. The diya holds five wicks at once, traditionally associated with the pancha mahabhuta - earth, water, fire, air and space.

Five - one per face. Standard round or long cotton wicks fit.

Yes. The handle lets you circle the lamp during aarti without holding hot brass.

It depends on the ghee or oil used and the wick size. For a typical aarti of a few minutes, one filling is more than enough; refill rather than overfilling the well.

Most households use a single-wick diya daily and bring out the panchmukhi for Diwali, Navratri and other festival aartis.
