The fast that ends at moonrise

Karwa Chauth runs a full day without food or water, and the whole observance turns on two objects: the karwa from which the arghya is offered, and the chhalni through which the moon and then the husband are first seen.

Both are easy to leave to the last day and hard to find that evening. This set puts the entire ritual — karwa, chhalni, shringar, thali and katha — in one box.

What is inside the set

  • Decorated karwa with lid — the clay or metal pot for the arghya
  • Chhalni (sieve) — for the moonlight ritual
  • Sindoor, bangles and bindi — solah shringar items
  • Karwa Chauth thali items — diya, flowers and kumkum
  • Puja sweets — mathri, pua and halwa samagri
  • Mauli, akshat and chandan
  • Karwa Chauth vrat katha booklet

How the day runs

  1. Sargi before sunrise — the pre-dawn meal traditionally sent by the mother-in-law.
  2. The fast is kept through the day without food or water.
  3. Evening puja — women gather, the thali is passed, and the Karwa Chauth vrat katha is read aloud.
  4. Gauri and Ganesh are worshipped, and the karwa is filled and offered.
  5. Moonrise — the moon is seen through the chhalni, arghya is offered from the karwa.
  6. The husband is then seen through the same chhalni, and he offers the first water and bite that breaks the fast.

What to arrange separately

The sargi meal, fresh flowers and fruits, milk and water for the arghya, mehendi, and the saree or clothing worn for the evening. Sweets can be made at home from the samagri included or bought fresh.

A note on the fast

Karwa Chauth is a nirjala vrat — kept without water. Anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, on regular medication, or unwell should modify or skip the fast; many families keep a phalahar version instead. Tradition allows for this, and it is worth deciding in advance rather than on the day.

Ideal for

Karwa Chauth vrat, a first Karwa Chauth after marriage, newlywed gifting, mother-in-law to daughter-in-law gifting, and NRI households observing abroad.

Yes. The chhalni is included - it is the item most often missing and the one the ritual cannot be completed without.

No. Sargi is a fresh pre-dawn meal, traditionally prepared or sent by the mother-in-law, so it is arranged at home.

Yes, and it is a common gift for one. The vrat katha booklet sets out the full sequence, which is helpful when keeping the fast for the first time.
