Why cotton, and only cotton

A wick made with synthetic fibre or blended thread burns unevenly, produces black smoke, and gives off a faint plastic smell that is unmistakable once you know it. Pure cotton draws ghee or oil steadily up the wick and burns with a clean, still flame.

These are hand-rolled from pure cotton with no blending — which is the only thing that actually matters in a wick.

Details

  • 100 long cotton wicks (lambi batti)
  • Pure cotton, hand-rolled
  • Suited to ghee, sesame oil, mustard oil and blended puja oils
  • Even burn with a steady flame

Long wick or round wick?

  • Long wicks lie along the diya with the tip resting on the rim. Used in most standard diyas and in the panchmukhi.
  • Round wicks sit as a coil in the centre of the oil. Used in flat and shallow diyas, and where the flame needs to sit upright.

Most households keep both. If you own one type of diya only, match the wick to its shape.

How to use them

  1. Lay the wick in the diya with the tip over the rim, leaving most of its length in the ghee or oil.
  2. Let it soak briefly before lighting so the flame catches evenly.
  3. Trim any charred tip before relighting a partly used wick.
  4. Use one wick per diya for daily aarti; five for a panchmukhi.

Storage

Keep in a dry, closed container. Cotton absorbs moisture and damp wicks will not draw oil properly or light cleanly.

Ideal for

Daily aarti, akhand jyot, Diwali, Navratri, mandir and temple use, and topping up a puja kit.

Yes, hand-rolled pure cotton with no synthetic blending. Blended wicks burn unevenly, smoke black and give off a faint plastic smell.

Yes. Cotton wicks work with ghee, sesame oil, mustard oil and blended puja lamp oils.

Usually one of three things - a synthetic blend in the wick, a charred tip that was not trimmed before relighting, or too little oil so the wick burns dry.

In a dry, closed container. Cotton absorbs moisture and damp wicks will not draw oil properly or light cleanly.

For a household lighting one diya morning and evening, roughly a month and a half of daily use.
