Ghatasthapana is the part that cannot be improvised

Navratri opens with Ghatasthapana on Pratipada: the kalash established at the muhurat, the jau sown in soil to sprout through the nine days, the Mata photo installed, the chunri offered. Everything after that is daily worship of the same setup.

Miss the jau on day one and there is nothing to sprout by Navami. Which is why this kit leads with the sthapana items rather than the havan ones.

Essential or Complete — the honest comparison

Most households already own a puja thali, a bell and a shankh. If you do, the Essential kit avoids paying for them twice — but if you perform the havan, buy the Complete kit.

How Ghatasthapana is done

1. On Pratipada, at the muhurat, place the kalash on a bed of soil on the chowki.
2. Sow the jau in the soil around the kalash — it sprouts across the nine days and is distributed as prasad at the end.
3. Tie kalava around the neck of the kalash, fill with water and gangajal, and add akshat and a coin.
4. Place mango leaves and the coconut wrapped in red cloth on top.
5. Install the Mata photo, offer the chunri and the shringar set, and take the sankalp.
6. Perform daily puja to each form of Navadurga through the nine days — tilak, akshat, flowers, naivedya, diya and aarti.

A note on quantities

Item quantities in the Essential kit are sized for one performance of the ritual in a household setting. Where a puja runs long, has many guests, or includes a full havan, the Complete kit is the correct choice — it carries the same items in ceremony quantities plus the havan and extended naivedya components.

What to arrange separately

Soil for sowing the jau, fresh flowers, fruits, ghee or oil for the lamps, and the food for Kanya Pujan. Ashtami and Navami dates vary by panchang and regional tradition — confirm your local dates before the sankalp.
