The wick for shallow diyas

A long wick needs a rim to rest on. In a flat clay diya or a shallow brass lamp there is nothing to rest it against, so the wick slides into the oil and drowns. A round wick solves that: it coils in the centre, sits low in the oil, and holds the flame upright from the middle of the lamp.

Details

  • 100 round cotton wicks (gol batti)
  • Pure cotton, hand-rolled — no synthetic blending
  • Sits upright in flat and shallow diyas
  • Works with ghee, sesame oil, mustard oil and blended puja oils

How to use them

  1. Place the coil in the centre of the diya, with the tip standing slightly proud of the oil.
  2. Add ghee or oil until the coil is soaked but the tip stays dry.
  3. Let it soak for a moment before lighting.
  4. Trim the charred tip before relighting a used wick.

Round wick or long wick?

  • Round — flat clay diyas, shallow brass lamps, floating diyas in an urli.
  • Long — standard deep diyas with a rim, and panchmukhi diyas.

Storage

Keep in a dry, closed container. Damp cotton will not draw oil properly and lights poorly.

Ideal for

Clay diyas at Diwali, floating diyas in an urli, daily aarti, mandir and temple use, and topping up a puja kit.

Use round wicks in flat clay diyas, shallow brass lamps and floating diyas, where there is no rim for a long wick to rest against. Use long wicks in deeper diyas with a rim.

Yes, hand-rolled pure cotton with no synthetic blending.

Yes - round wicks are the usual choice for floating diyas because they sit low and hold the flame upright.

Usually the tip has been submerged. Add oil until the coil is soaked but leave the tip standing dry above the surface.

In a dry, closed container. Cotton absorbs moisture and damp wicks light poorly.

Yes - brass diyas, panchmukhi diyas, clay diya packs and cow-dung diyas are all in our Diyas, Wicks & Lamp Oil range.
