The puja of a promise kept

Satyanarayan puja is performed when something has gone right. A vow fulfilled, a house moved into, a business begun, a child born, a marriage completed. Families gather, the katha is read in five chapters, and the prasad is shared.

It is also the most commonly repeated puja in the Hindu calendar — observed on Purnima each month — which means the samagri gets used often and runs out quietly. This kit is assembled so the puja can be called at short notice and still be complete.

How the puja runs

  1. Clean the space, set the chowki, and establish the copper kalash with gangajal, coconut and red cloth.
  2. Take the sankalp, naming the reason for the puja.
  3. Perform Ganesh puja, then Navagraha and the puja of Lord Satyanarayan.
  4. Read the Satyanarayan Katha in its five adhyayas, with the family seated together.
  5. Perform the havan with the samagri, samidha and guggal.
  6. Offer the prasad, perform aarti with camphor, and distribute the prasad to all present.

When Satyanarayan puja is performed

Most commonly on Purnima (full moon) each month, and on Kartik Purnima and Vaishakh Purnima in particular. It is also performed on Ekadashi, at griha pravesh, after a marriage, on the birth of a child, at the start of a business, or whenever a vow has been fulfilled.

What to arrange separately

Fresh milk, curd and ghee for the panchamrit, bananas and banana leaves, fresh flowers, tulsi leaves, and the sinni or sheera prasad (semolina, sugar, ghee, banana) are prepared at home on the day. The Satyanarayan Katha book and the pandit’s dakshina are arranged separately.

A copper kalash, 1 litre gangajal, three coconuts, red kalash cloth, 500 g jau, tilak samagri (kumkum, haldi, chandan, ashtagandha, akshat), janeu and kalava, honey, supari, paan, laung, elaichi, panchmeva, mishri, dry fruits and raisins, camphor, cotton wicks, two brass diyas, agarbatti, dhoop, matchboxes, and 1 kg each of havan samagri and samidha with guggal.

Fresh milk, curd and ghee for the panchamrit, bananas and banana leaves, fresh flowers, tulsi leaves, and the sinni or sheera prasad. The Satyanarayan Katha book and the pandit dakshina are also arranged separately.

Most commonly on Purnima each month, and especially on Kartik and Vaishakh Purnima. It is also performed on Ekadashi, at griha pravesh, after a marriage, on the birth of a child, at the start of a business, or on the fulfilment of any vow.

Many families perform it themselves, with one member reading the katha aloud in its five adhyayas while the others listen. A pandit is commonly invited for larger gatherings or a first-time observance.

The samagri quantities suit a household puja with family and close guests, including a 1 kg havan. For a very large gathering or a community puja, share the item list with your pandit in advance so any additional quantity can be ordered.

The kit is sourced, curated and hand-packed in Sigra, Varanasi (Kashi), following the traditional Satyanarayan vidhi item list, with no fillers or substitutions.
