The Griha Pravesh ceremony has a precise sequence. Performed correctly, it transforms the act of moving house from a logistical event into a sacred rite of passage. Here is the complete vidhi — what to do, in what order, and why.
The Night Before: Preparation
Clean the entire home. Smear the threshold with turmeric water. Hang a fresh mango leaf torana across the main door. Draw a Swastika at the entrance with rice flour. Set up the puja area inside with all samagri.
Morning of the Puja
Bathe and dress in new or freshly washed clothes — yellow, red, or white are most auspicious. Do not eat before the main ceremony.
Step 1: Shuddhi (Purification)
Sprinkle Gangajal throughout all rooms, starting from the entrance and moving clockwise. Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” as you sprinkle. This clears residual energy and prepares the space as sacred.
Step 2: Kalash Sthapana
Fill the brass Kalash with Gangajal and unbroken rice. Insert five mango leaves around the rim. Place the whole coconut (coir intact) atop. Mark a swastika in roli on the Kalash. Chant: “Om Varunaaya Namah.”
Step 3: Ganesh Puja
Place the Ganesh idol facing east. Light the ghee lamp and agarbatti. Apply tilak. Offer red flowers and modak. Chant 108 repetitions of “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah” followed by the Ganesh Stuti.
Step 4: Vastu Puja
Offer flowers, rice, and roli at the home’s centre point. Chant: “Om Vastu Purushaya Namah. Shantir Astu, Pushti Astu, Tushti Astu.” If a pandit is present, they will conduct the Navgraha and Vastu puja at this stage.
Step 5: Havan (Sacred Fire)
Light the havan kund using mango wood and cow ghee. Offer havan samagri with each swaha, chanting Vastu Shanti and Griha Pravesh mantras. All family members should be present. Allow the fire to complete naturally.
Step 6: The Entry — Most Sacred Moment
The woman of the house stands at the main entrance. She applies kumkum to both door panels. She steps over the threshold with her right foot first — never the left. As she enters, she gently tips the rice bowl so that some rice spills onto the floor — Lakshmi entering the home.
The man of the house follows, carrying the lit Kalash or a lamp. Children and other family members enter after.
Step 7: Doodh Ubalna (Boiling of Milk)
Go immediately to the kitchen. Place a full brass vessel of cow milk on the stove. Let it boil and overflow completely. Do not stop it. The overflow is the blessing — the abundance that will fill this home. Everyone gathers in the kitchen. When the milk overflows, there is joy — clapping, blessings, celebration.
Step 8: Lakshmi Puja
Perform a short Lakshmi puja at the puja room. Offer yellow flowers, turmeric, kumkum, coins, and betel leaves. Chant: “Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah.” Invite Lakshmi to make this home her permanent abode.
Step 9: Aarti
Perform Ganesh and Lakshmi Aarti. Ring the bell throughout. All family members participate.
Step 10: Prasad Distribution
Distribute panchmeva, fruits, and sweets. The first meal cooked in the new kitchen should ideally be kheer. Feed a portion to a cow or bird before the family eats.
After the Puja
- Keep a lamp burning continuously for 24 hours after Griha Pravesh
- Do not leave the home completely empty for the first three days
- Welcome guests with warm hospitality — the first people to enter help set the home’s social energy
