Griha Pravesh Samagri List: Everything You Need

Moving into a new home is one of the most significant milestones in a family's life. The Griha Pravesh puja marks and blesses this transition — and the completeness of your samagri determines the completeness of the ceremony.

Below is the full Griha Pravesh samagri list, with each item explained so you know not just what to source, but why it is needed.

Purification and Space Consecration

Gangajal — For sprinkling throughout the home. Purifies the space of residual energies.

Panchagavya — The five sacred cow products. Used in the preliminary purification (Shuddhi) of the home.

Haldi (Raw turmeric) — For smearing the threshold and door frames. Spiritually protective.

Geru (Red ochre) — For marking Swastikas near the entrance.

Rice flour (Chawal ka aata) — For drawing rangoli and the Swastika at the entrance.

Door and Threshold Items

Mango leaves (Aam ki patti) — For the torana hung across the main door. Hang an odd number — 7, 11, or 21 leaves.

Marigold garland — Orange or yellow marigolds for the main door.

Coconut (with coir) — Placed atop the Kalash. Must be whole with the brown coir shell intact.

Brass or copper Kalash — Filled with Gangajal and five mango leaves. Never plastic or steel.

For Ganesh Puja

Ganesh idol — Facing east. Clay or brass is traditional.

Roli (Kumkum) — Red powder for tilak and offering.

Akshat (Unbroken rice) — White, whole, uncooked rice grains.

Red flowers — Hibiscus (Gurhal) is Lord Ganesha's most beloved flower.

Modak or Laddoo — Ganesha's favourite sweet offering.

Dhoop — Natural resin dhoop preferred.

Ghee lamp (Deep) — Clay or brass diya with cow ghee and cotton wick.

For Havan / Vastu Shanti

Havan kund — Sacred fire pit; copper or brick is traditional.

Havan samagri — Complete herb-grain-resin mix. Should not be assembled individually.

Mango wood (Aam ki lakdi) — Most auspicious havan fuel.

Cow ghee (pure) — Only desi cow ghee. Never vegetable ghee.

Barley (Jau) — Offered into the fire as a primary ingredient.

Black sesame (Kala Til) — Removes Vastu doshas.

Camphor (Kapoor) — For lighting and specific havan offerings.

For Lakshmi Puja

Lakshmi idol — Installed at the puja room or kitchen during the ceremony.

Lotus flowers or yellow marigolds — Lakshmi's most beloved flowers.

Turmeric and Kumkum — Applied to the Lakshmi idol.

5 or 11 coins — Offered before Lakshmi as prosperity offering.

Betel leaves (Paan ke patte) — 5 or 7 leaves in a circle under the idol.

Betel nut (Supari) — Placed alongside betel leaves.

General Samagri

Panchamrit — Milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar for abhishek.

Panchmeva — Five dried fruits: almonds, cashews, raisins, dried coconut, dates.

Chandan (Sandalwood paste) — For anointing idols and participants.

Agarbatti — Natural, resin-based incense preferred.

Moli / Kalava — Sacred red-yellow thread for participants' wrists.

Raw rice (Chawal) — Carried by the woman of the house at the moment of entry.

Full-fat cow milk — For Doodh Ubalna. Must overflow. At least 1–2 litres in a brass vessel.

Banana, fruits, coconut — For naivedya and prasad.

Sourcing Notes

Mango wood: Must be actual aam ki lakdi, not a substitute. Verify with your supplier.

Havan samagri: A full traditional mix contains 21+ herbs. Pre-mixed samagri from reliable sources is best.

Cow ghee: Only pure desi cow ghee for havan. Adulterated ghee diminishes the ceremony.

Our Griha Pravesh Puja Kit from Kashi contains the full samagri assembled by Pt. Prashant Chaturvedi in Varanasi. Fresh flowers, fresh milk, and fruits you source locally on the day.

Shubh Griha Pravesh.
