Entering a new home is one of the most significant transitions in a family’s life. In the Hindu tradition, this threshold is not merely physical — it is sacred. The Griha Pravesh puja is the ritual that transforms a structure of concrete and steel into a home: a consecrated space where the family’s prayers, memories, and prosperity will be rooted for generations.
This guide covers everything you need: the meaning of the ritual, the complete step-by-step vidhi, the full samagri list, auspicious muhurat for 2026, and how to adapt the puja for different types of homes.
What is Griha Pravesh Puja?
Griha means home; Pravesh means entry. Griha Pravesh is the sacred ceremony of first entry into a new residence — a Vedic ritual that purifies the space of any negative or neutral energies from its construction, consecrates it with divine protection, establishes the home’s Vastu alignment, and formally invites prosperity and peace into the household.
According to the Grihyasutras — the ancient Vedic texts on household rituals — a home must be ritually entered before it is inhabited.
The Three Types of Griha Pravesh
- Apoorva — First entry into a newly constructed home. Most elaborate ceremony.
- Sapoorva — Re-entry after renovation or extended absence.
- Dwandwah — Entry after a period of inauspiciousness. Performed with specific purification rituals.

Step-by-Step Griha Pravesh Vidhi
Day Before
Clean the home thoroughly. Smear the threshold with turmeric water. Draw a Swastika at the entrance with rice flour. Hang fresh mango leaf torana and marigold garland across the main door.
Step 1: Kalash Sthapana
Fill the brass Kalash with Gangajal and unbroken rice. Insert five mango leaves around the rim. Place a whole coconut atop the Kalash. Mark a swastika in roli on the Kalash.
Step 2: Ganesh Puja
Place Ganesh idol facing east. Offer roli, akshat, red flowers, dhoop, deep, and modak. Chant: “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah. Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva, Sarva Karyeshu Sarvada.”
Step 3: Vastu Puja
Place offerings at the centre of the home. Propitiate Vastu Purusha — the spirit inhabiting the structure. Chant: “Om Vastu Purushaya Namah. Shantir Astu, Pushti Astu, Tushti Astu.”
Step 4: Havan
Set up the havan kund. Light the fire with mango wood and cow ghee. Offer havan samagri with Vastu Shanti mantras. All family members should be present. Allow the fire to complete naturally.
Step 5: The Entry — Most Sacred Moment
The woman of the house enters first, carrying a brass bowl of raw rice, right foot first — never the left. She tips the rice bowl slightly so some rice spills into the home — Lakshmi entering. The man follows with the Kalash. Children follow. Other family members enter last.
Step 6: Doodh Ubalna
In the kitchen, boil cow milk in a brass vessel and allow it to overflow completely. Do not stop it. The overflow symbolises abundance. This is the most joyous moment — everyone gathers to watch and celebrate.
Step 7: Lakshmi Puja
Perform Lakshmi puja at the puja room. Offer yellow flowers, turmeric, kumkum, coins, and sweets. Invite Lakshmi to make this home her permanent abode.
Step 8: Aarti and Prasad
Perform Ganesh and Lakshmi Aarti. Distribute prasad. Feed the first meal cooked in the new home to a cow or bird before the family eats.
After the Puja
- Do not leave the home empty for the first 3 days
- Light a ghee lamp at the puja room every morning and evening for 40 days
- The first guests should be close family and friends who genuinely wish you well
