Of all the rituals within Navratri, Kanya Pujan is the one that asks the most of the devotee — and gives the most in return.
You are not inviting ordinary children to your home. You are inviting the goddess herself — in her most accessible, most living, most present form. The nine young girls who sit in your home on Ashtami are not symbols of Maa Durga. According to the tradition, they are Maa Durga, temporarily housed in nine small bodies that have not yet been touched by ego, pride, or the accumulated karma of adult life.
To wash their feet. To offer them food. To give them gifts. These are not acts of hospitality — they are acts of worship directed at the goddess in her most direct form.
This is the complete guide to Kanya Pujan: its meaning, the correct vidhi, the age rules, the food to prepare, and the blessings it bestows.
What is Kanya Pujan?
Kanya Pujan — also known as Kanjak, Kanjaki, or Kumari Puja — is the ritual of worshipping young girls (kanyas) as living manifestations of the divine feminine. It is performed on Ashtami (the 8th day of Navratri) and sometimes also on Navami (the 9th day), depending on regional tradition.
The nine kanyas invited for the puja represent the nine forms of Durga — each girl becomes a living vessel for one of the Navadurga. The ritual has its roots in the Devi Bhagavata Purana and the Shakta tantric tradition, which recognise that the divine feminine inhabits the living body of a young girl who has not yet entered puberty — in a state of natural purity.
Why Ashtami?
Ashtami is dedicated to Maa Mahagauri — the form of Durga that embodies purity, radiance, and the cleansing of past karma. The Kanya Pujan is placed on Ashtami because the energy of purification and new beginnings is most potent on this day. In Navratri 2026, Ashtami falls on 29 September 2026.
Who Qualifies as a Kanya?
Age: Between 2 and 10 years. Girls below the age of puberty. The key criterion is pre-pubescence, which corresponds to the state of natural purity the ritual requires.
Number: Traditionally 9 kanyas — one for each form of Durga. Some traditions invite 8 kanyas + 1 Bal Batuk (a young boy representing Lord Bhairav). The minimum is 2; the ideal is 9.
Background: Kanyas from all backgrounds may be invited. Maa Durga makes no distinctions. Include one's own daughters and invite girls from the neighbourhood.
Kanya Pujan Samagri
For worship: Aarti thali with diya, kumkum, roli, akshat; fresh flowers; Gangajal for washing feet; clean cloth for the kanyas to sit on; chunri (red or pink cloth) for each kanya.
For the meal (for 9 kanyas): Suji ka halwa (make generously); puri (6–8 per kanya); kala chana (whole black chickpeas, soaked overnight); fruits.
For gifts (one per kanya): Fruits, coins or a small cash envelope, bangles, sweets or mishri.
Kanya Pujan Vidhi: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Preparation
Soak kala chana overnight. Invite kanyas' parents. Prepare seating — spread a clean cloth or mat for all nine girls to sit side by side.
Step 2: Receive the Kanyas
Welcome each kanya at the door. Apply a tilak of kumkum on her forehead as she enters.
Step 3: Pada Puja (Washing the Feet)
This is the heart of the ritual. Take Gangajal in a small copper bowl. Gently wash each kanya's feet, right to left. This is an act of humility and worship — you are washing the feet of the goddess. After washing, apply a small kumkum mark on the right big toe of each kanya.
Step 4: Offer Chunri and Akshat
Drape a red or pink chunri over each kanya's shoulders — it is her gift to take home. Place akshat and flower petals at each kanya's feet. Ring the bell and offer a small diya to each girl as you would before a murti.
Step 5: Serve the Meal
Serve halwa first (a generous portion), then puris, then chana, then fruit. The kanyas eat as prasad — the devotee serves and does not eat until the kanyas have finished and left.
Step 6: Dakshina and Blessings
After the meal, give each kanya her dakshina (gift). Ask each kanya to bless you. Receive the tika from her hand as prasad. See them off respectfully at the door.

Ingredients: 2 cups kala chana (soaked overnight), 3 tbsp ghee, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp rock salt, 1 tsp amchur, fresh coriander.

Kanya Pujan for NRIs and Diaspora Communities
Finding kanyas: Reach out to your local Hindu temple — they often know families who bring young girls for Navratri. Indian community groups and family friends are also good sources.
If you cannot find 9 kanyas: Invite as many as you can find — even 2 or 3. The intention and the ritual are complete even with fewer kanyas.
Gifts abroad: A beautifully wrapped gift bag with chocolates, fruits, a small book, or a hair accessory is perfectly appropriate where cash gifts feel awkward. The gesture of generosity is what carries the worship.
Blessings of Kanya Pujan
Traditional texts describe Kanya Pujan's blessings as among the most direct Navratri can bestow: fulfilment of sincere prayers, resolution of longstanding problems (financial, health, family discord), blessings for children and fertility, and protection of the home through the coming year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I perform Kanya Pujan on Navami instead of Ashtami?
Yes. Both days are auspicious. Some families perform it on both.
Q: Can boys participate?
In many traditions, one Bal Batuk (young boy) is invited alongside the kanyas, representing Lord Bhairav, protector of the goddess.
Q: What if the girls don't finish the meal?
The remaining halwa, puri, and chana are distributed to family members as prasad.
Q: Can I do Kanya Pujan with only 1 or 2 girls?
Yes. One kanya is enough. The worship is complete even with one kanya if done with genuine bhav and care.
