Shivratri Fasting Rules: What You Can and Cannot Eat

Maha Shivratri is observed as a night-long fast by millions of Shiva devotees. The fast is a conscious act of self-offering. By emptying the body, the devotee makes space for the divine.

Maha Shivratri 2026: February 18, 2026

Types of Shivratri Fast

Nirjala Vrat (Water-free): No food or water from sunrise to sunrise. Strictest form. For those in good health with progressive fasting experience.

Phalahara Vrat (Fruit-only): Fruits and milk only. Most commonly observed form.

Ek-Bhukt Vrat (One-meal): One sattvic meal on the afternoon before the puja begins at sunset.

Modified Fast: For those with medical conditions. Sattvic food at prescribed intervals. Lord Shiva is Bholenath — sincere intention with a modified practice is fully valid.

What You Can Eat on Shivratri

Completely Permitted

  • All fruits — banana, apple, mango, guava, papaya, pomegranate, coconut
  • Dairy — cow milk, curd, buttermilk, paneer, ghee
  • Makhana (Fox nuts) — roasted in ghee with rock salt
  • Nuts and seeds — almonds, cashews, walnuts, peanuts
  • Sabudana dishes — khichdi or kheer with rock salt and ghee
  • Singhare / Kuttu flour dishes — with rock salt only
  • Potato and sweet potato — without onion and garlic
  • Sendha namak (Rock salt) — the only salt permitted

Not Permitted

  • All grains: rice, wheat, barley, dal, corn, maida
  • Onion and garlic
  • Non-vegetarian food in any form
  • Table salt (iodised) — use only sendha namak
  • Processed or packaged food
  • Alcohol, fermented foods

The Night Watch

The Shivratri fast’s unique quality is the overnight vigil. Staying awake through the night while performing puja at each prahar is considered extremely meritorious.

How to stay awake: Chant Om Namah Shivaya · Read the Shiva Purana · Listen to bhajans · Perform abhishek at each prahar

If you cannot stay awake all night: Perform puja at the Nishita Kaal — midnight, approximately 11:00 PM to 12:30 AM. This is the most sacred watch of the Shivratri night. Staying awake specifically for this period is considered a complete observance.

Breaking the Fast: Sunrise Parana (February 19, 2026)

  1. Perform a brief morning puja (abhishek and aarti)
  2. Receive prasad first — before any regular food
  3. Break the fast with simple, light food: fresh fruit, warm milk, light khichdi
  4. Avoid heavy, fried, or spicy food for the first half of the day

The body has been in a purified state for nearly 24 hours. Honour that purification with gentle food choices.
