Maha Shivratri Puja Kit: Everything Inside Explained

A Maha Shivratri Puja Kit from Kashi is not a collection of items — it is a curated ceremony in a box. Every item has a specific role, and every item is sourced from Varanasi.

The Kit Contents

Gangajal — Water drawn from the ghats of Kashi. The most important abhishek substance. Used for the continuous night-long abhishek that is the ceremony’s central act.

Bilva Patra (Bel Leaves) — Dried bilva leaves from Kashi’s ancient trees. Pesticide-free, properly dried. Non-negotiable for Shiva puja. Offer throughout all four prahar.

Bhasma (Sacred Ash) — Vibhuti prepared according to Vedic specifications from cow dung, sacred wood, and herbs. Not ordinary ash. Applied to the Shivalinga and the devotee’s forehead during puja.

Chandan (Sandalwood Paste) — Pure white sandalwood paste. Applied after abhishek. Shiva’s cooling anointment.

Roli and Akshat — Red powder and unbroken rice for tilak and offerings throughout the ceremony.

Panchamrit samagri — Pre-measured misri and herbs. Add fresh milk, curd, honey, and ghee on the day.

Kapoor (Camphor) — Pure camphor for the Shivratri night aarti. Burns completely without residue — the symbol of ego dissolving in devotion.

Agarbatti — Natural, resin-based incense. Sandalwood or bilva fragrance.

Moli (Sacred Thread) — Red-yellow cotton thread for tying on the wrist.

Kala Til (Black Sesame) — For Shani dosha and ancestral karma relief.

Supari and Paan — Betel nut and betel leaf for naivedya.

What You Add on the Day

Fresh bilva patra (if available) · Fresh milk, curd, honey, ghee (for Panchamrit) · Dhatura, white flowers, madar · Fresh fruits for naivedya
