One of the most common questions about Satyanarayan Puja is timing. Unlike some pujas that are tightly bound to specific nakshatras or muhurat windows, Satyanarayan Puja is remarkably flexible. But there are days and circumstances that are traditionally most auspicious.
The Katha’s Own Answer: Any Day with Sincere Devotion
The Satyanarayan Katha addresses this directly. In the second chapter, Lord Vishnu tells Narada: “This puja can be performed on any day, any tithi, at any time. I am pleased by sincere bhav above all else.”
The puja is accessible to everyone, every day. There is no inauspicious day for Satyanarayan Puja in the way there is for Griha Pravesh.
Most Auspicious Days
Purnima (Full Moon) — Most Recommended
Every Purnima is traditionally the most favoured day. Most Hindu families who perform the puja monthly choose Purnima.
Key Purnima dates in 2026:
- February 12 (Magha Purnima — highly auspicious)
- May 12 (Vaishakh Purnima / Buddha Purnima — very significant)
- July 10 (Ashadha Purnima / Guru Purnima — extremely auspicious)
- October 7 (Ashwin Purnima / Sharad Purnima — most sacred for Vishnu)
Ekadashi (11th Tithi) — Vishnu’s Own Day
The 11th day of both the waxing and waning lunar fortnight is Lord Vishnu’s most sacred tithi. Satyanarayan Puja on Ekadashi multiplies the merit manyfold. The most significant include Devshayani Ekadashi, Devutthana Ekadashi, and Nirjala Ekadashi.
Thursday (Guruvar) — Weekly Option
Thursday is Lord Vishnu’s day of the week. A regular Thursday Satyanarayan Puja practice is a beautiful devotional habit. Many families do this monthly or on special Thursdays.
Occasion-Based Timing
Satyanarayan Puja is the puja of choice for marking significant life transitions:
- New home: On the day of Griha Pravesh or the first Purnima after moving in
- New business or job: First auspicious Thursday or Purnima after beginning
- Marriage: Within the first month post-wedding
- Birthday: On or near the birthday; especially significant milestones
- Anniversary: First, fifth, tenth, silver and golden milestones
- Vow fulfilment: Whenever a promised puja comes due — do not delay
How Often Should You Perform Satyanarayan Puja?
- Monthly (Purnima): Ideal regular practice
- Quarterly: Minimum for families maintaining the tradition
- Annually: For families performing it on a specific occasion
- As needed: Any time a significant blessing is received or a vow fulfilled
