The Satyanarayan Puja has a relatively compact samagri list compared to other major pujas — which is part of its beauty. Every item is purposeful. Below is the complete list with each item explained, plus the traditional Sheera recipe for the puja’s most essential offering.
Puja Setup Items
Banana leaf or clean cotton cloth — As the base for the puja altar. Banana leaf is traditional and most auspicious.
Brass or copper Kalash — Filled with Gangajal and five mango leaves, with a coconut placed atop.
Vishnu idol or framed image — Lord Satyanarayan facing east. A clean, respectfully kept image.
Ghee lamp (Deep) — Clay or brass diya with cow ghee and cotton wick. Must not go out during the puja.
Bell (Ghanta) — Rung throughout the aarti.
Offering Items
Tulsi leaves (Tulsi patra) — The most important offering to Lord Vishnu. Non-negotiable. Fresh, clean, undamaged leaves. Never offer wilted or damaged tulsi.
Yellow flowers — Marigold, champa, or any yellow fragrant flower. Yellow is Vishnu’s colour.
Lotus — If available. White or pink lotus is ideal.
Panchamrit — Milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar — for abhishek of the Vishnu idol.
Gangajal — For abhishek and the Kalash.
Chandan (Sandalwood paste) — Applied to the idol.
Roli (Kumkum) — For tilak.
Akshat (Unbroken rice) — White, whole, uncooked rice throughout the puja.
General Samagri

The Panchamrit Prasad (Sheera): Recipe
The Sheera is the central prasad of Satyanarayan Puja and cannot be substituted. Prepare fresh on the day.
| Ingredient | Quantity (4 persons) | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Whole wheat flour (atta) | 1 cup | Earth — nourishment |
| Ripe banana | 2 medium | Sweetness of life |
| Sugar | ¾ cup | Joy and contentment |
| Pure cow ghee | ½ cup | Purity and illumination |
| Cow milk | 1 cup | Nourishment and purity |
Preparation:
- Heat ghee in a heavy pan on medium flame.
- Add wheat flour and roast on low heat, stirring continuously, until golden and fragrant — approximately 10–12 minutes.
- Mash the bananas and add. Stir 2–3 minutes.
- Add sugar and milk simultaneously. Stir until the mixture thickens and leaves the sides of the pan.
Prepare after the Katha recitation. Offer to Lord Satyanarayan before distributing. Prepare enough for every person present.
