Satyanarayan Puja: Complete Guide with Katha, Vidhi & Samagri

Few pujas carry the intimacy and accessibility of Satyanarayan Puja. Unlike elaborate multi-day ceremonies, Satyanarayan Puja can be performed in a single afternoon by any householder — yet its spiritual significance is immense. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Satyanarayan: the Lord of Truth, the sustainer of all creation.

Families perform this puja to express gratitude, mark new beginnings, seek divine blessings for specific intentions, or simply as a regular act of devotion. Its simplicity is its gift. Its depth is its power.

What is Satyanarayan Puja?

Satyanarayan Puja is a Vaishnava puja dedicated to Lord Vishnu, performed in the home with the recitation of the Satyanarayan Katha and the offering of Panchamrit, fruits, and Sheera (the sacred prasad of wheat, banana, sugar, milk, and ghee).

The puja originates in the Skanda Purana, where Lord Vishnu instructs the sage Narada on how to prescribe this puja to suffering mortals. What makes this puja unique is its democratic accessibility. There are no strict caste requirements, no need for elaborate equipment, no mandatory pandit. A family with sincere bhav and clean samagri can perform a complete and valid Satyanarayan Puja.

Best Days for Satyanarayan Puja

Purnima (Full Moon): The most recommended day. Every Purnima is traditionally ideal for Satyanarayan Puja.

Ekadashi (11th Tithi): The day of Vishnu’s special observance. Satyanarayan Puja on Ekadashi is especially meritorious.

Thursday (Guruvar): Lord Vishnu’s day of the week. A regular Thursday practice is a beautiful devotional habit.

Any new beginning: New home, new job, new business, marriage, birthday, anniversary, or vow fulfilment.

Step-by-Step Satyanarayan Puja Vidhi

Preparation

Set up the altar on a clean cloth. Place the Vishnu idol facing east. Fill the Kalash with Gangajal and five mango leaves. Place a coconut atop. Arrange all samagri.

Step 1: Sankalp

Hold water, akshat, and a flower in your right palm. State your name, gotra, location, and specific intention: “Om Vishnu Om Vishnu Om Vishnu. Adya [date], I, [name], am performing Satyanarayan Puja for [intention] at the feet of Lord Satyanarayan.”

Step 2: Ganesh Puja

Offer roli, akshat, and flowers to Lord Ganesha. Chant “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah” 21 times.

Step 3: Vishnu Puja (Shodashopachara)

Offer to Lord Satyanarayan: chandan, roli, tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, Panchamrit, dhoop, deep, panchmeva, and fruits. For each: “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya. Idam [item] Satyanaraya Namah.”

Step 4: Satyanarayan Katha Recitation

Recite or listen to all five chapters. The puja is considered incomplete without the full Katha. All family members should be seated and attentive throughout.

Step 5: Aarti

Perform Vishnu Aarti with the ghee lamp. Chant “Om Jai Jagdish Hare…” Ring the bell throughout.

Step 6: Sheera Prasad Distribution

Prepare the Sheera (roast wheat flour in ghee, add banana, sugar, and milk) and offer it before distributing. Distribute to every person present without exception. Never allow anyone to refuse it.

The Five Stories of the Satyanarayan Katha

The Katha contains five chapters, each telling a story of divine grace:

  1. The Poor Brahmin: Sincere devotion brings swift abundance regardless of material condition.
  2. The Woodcutter: Simply hearing the Katha and receiving prasad brings blessing.
  3. The Merchant’s Unfulfilled Vow: A vow to perform the puja must never be forgotten.
  4. The King and the Prasad: Prasad must never be disrespected or refused.
  5. Shreedat’s Release: The Katha’s power transcends distance; prasad must always be received first.

Every item in our Satyanarayan Puja Kit from Kashi is sourced from Varanasi by Pt. Prashant Chaturvedi. Fresh tulsi, banana, and milk you source locally.
