Trayodashi Ki Sandhya, Mahadev Ki Upasana.

Pradosh Vrat falls on the Trayodashi of both fortnights — twice a lunar month, roughly twenty-four times a year. It is the observance in which Shiva and Parvati are worshipped together, and it is performed in a window most households miss: the ninety minutes around sunset.

The Advik Rituals Pradosh Vrat Puja Kit carries 40 essentials for that evening — the Shiv-Parvati image, a rudraksha mala, abhishek and bhasma samagri, an optional small havan, and five printed cards including the vrat katha. Curated in Kashi.

Pradosh Kaal Is Short, and It Moves

Most pujas can be performed across a wide part of the day. Pradosh cannot.

Pradosh kaal is roughly the forty-five minutes either side of sunset on the Trayodashi tithi — about a ninety-minute window in total. Arrive late and you have not performed Pradosh; you have performed an evening puja on a Trayodashi, which is not the same observance.

Two things make it easy to get wrong. Sunset shifts by a few minutes every day and by nearly an hour and a half between Kolkata and Ahmedabad. And the Trayodashi tithi does not align with the calendar day — it may begin in the afternoon and end the following morning, so the tithi being "on" a date does not mean the sunset of that date falls inside it.

Check a panchang for the pradosh kaal in your own city, the day before. This is the single most useful thing you can do for this vrat, and it is why the kit is packed to be ready in advance rather than opened at dusk.

Which Pradosh Are You Keeping?

The day of the week names the observance and, by tradition, gives it its purpose. Households often keep one particular Pradosh rather than all of them.

DayNameTraditionally kept for
SundayRavi PradoshHealth and long life
MondaySom PradoshWellbeing and fulfilment of wishes
TuesdayBhaum PradoshRelief from debt and illness
WednesdayBudh PradoshLearning and desires
ThursdayGuru PradoshRemoval of obstacles
FridayShukra PradoshMarital harmony and prosperity
SaturdayShani PradoshProgeny; the most widely observed

These associations are traditional rather than prescriptive, and families differ. The vrat itself is the same on any day.

Belpatra and Panchamrit Are Arranged Fresh

Two things this kit does not ship, and both matter:

Fresh belpatra. The bilva leaf is Shiva's own offering and no Shiva puja is complete without it. Fresh leaves do not survive a courier. Source them locally on the day and offer the three leaves with the smooth side down.

Panchamrit. Milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar for the abhishek — perishable, and available in any Indian kitchen.

The fresh abhishek checklist card in this kit lists everything to buy on the day, so nothing is remembered at the last minute.

How to Observe Pradosh Vrat

  1. Sankalp. Take the vrat in the morning, reading the sankalp card. Most observers fast through the day on water, fruit or milk; a nirjala fast is optional.
  2. Bathe again in the late afternoon and wear clean clothes before pradosh kaal begins.
  3. Set up about an hour before sunset. Place the Shiv-Parvati image on the white cloth facing east or north.
  4. Ganesh puja first, then begin the main worship.
  5. Abhishek with gangajal, and with milk or panchamrit where customary.
  6. Offerings. Chandan, bhasma, akshat, kala til, jau, and the fresh belpatra and white flowers you have arranged.
  7. Mantra japa. With the rudraksha mala, recite "Om Namah Shivaya" — 108 repetitions is usual for personal worship, or follow your acharya's instruction.
  8. Read the Pradosh Vrat Katha from the included card.
  9. Havan — optional, where family tradition includes it, with ghee arranged locally.
  10. Aarti and prasad. Break the fast after the puja is complete.

Twice a Month, Every Month

This is a recurring discipline, not a festival. The consumable quantities here — 25 cotton batti, 20 g kapoor, 20 agarbatti, 5 clay diyas — are sized so one kit supports a Pradosh evening with enough left for the next fortnight's observance and the daily lamp in between.

Across the Shiva Calendar

Pradosh recurs twice a month; the rest of the Shiva year is served by the Rudrabhishek Puja Kit for the full abhishek ritual, the Mahamrityunjay Jaap Kit for a longer japa sankalp, the Mahashivratri Puja Kit for the festival night.
